1920s/30s German Small Bowl with Calla Lilies
Lovely small porcelain bowl often called a fruit bowl size, but perfect for serving after dinner mints, chocolates or other small items, and just attractive on display. Marked "Germany" both printed on the underside base and impressed here, indicating the bowl was made prior to World War II, likely in the 1920's or 1930's, our guess. What is impressive is the great interior decor of two Calla Lilies in bloom with orange centers and stems and leaves in white and green, with the lustre coating often seen in this period. The exterior is plain white.
Small round bowl has ornate floral petal type edging and measures a bit over 5 inches in diameter topside, with a smaller round base measuring 2 9/16 inches in diameter. We've provided 5 images; please allow time to load and note that the white "hot spots" are reflections from the camera lighting on the high gloss surface. While the German manufacturer is not indicated on this vintage piece, it has the same great look as other pieces we've seen made by R. S. Tillowitz and some of the other fine antique German china manufacturers.
Wonderful look and condition but does have some minor flaws, nothing unexpected for an old piece of this age. There is some interior scratching, not bad but there, with some of it on the leaf and stem decor, as well as some stray spots/dots/wear. There is some wear/color fading on the stems and florals (again not bad, but there), with color lustre wear on the molded interior ridges to the bowl. The bowl top rim may originally have had a darker line or gold edging...almost all of this is gone but the dots/spots of dark coloring/gold that are left in places along the rim suggest that this was once here. Along the rim edge there is one of these gold spots that may be a minor tiny flake, we're not sure, but certainly not bad. On the underside, on the side of the base rim there is one tiny chip but this is not very noticeable and won't be seen sitting on a table. There is other expected age wear to the underside (pin/pit dots) and wear to the rim itself on which this sits, including some tiny, tiny wear/flakes.
Not mint but a very attractive look, which would make a great gift for a gardener or anyone who loves calla lilies (calla lily). When we look at this bowl, we are reminded of the nifty scene with the great Katherine Hepburn in the 1930's movie, "Stage Door", when she makes an entrance in a Broadway play with the line, "The Calla Lilies are in bloom, again..."
