Manufacturer: Occupied Japan China
This is a nifty antique souvenir china piece which is also an occupied japan collectible piece. A small plate with a central hand painted design of pink flamingos, marked on the front side as "Souvenir of Miami, Florida" and on the backside with "Made in Occupied Japan" (a bit of the "O" and "D" in "Occupied" are missing as shown in the image but this is clearly what it says). The hand painted artwork shows three adult flamingo birds with one feeding a baby pink flamingo (a flamingo pup?), as well as palm trees, rocks and water. The plate is reticulated or has open cutwork near the outer edge providing a circular border of open rectangular shapes. The outer edge is scalloped with a gold design and an inner gold line trim around the central painted area.
A small round plate, dessert plate size with a diameter of 7 1/8 inches and sitting 3/4 inch in height. With the occupied japan marking we know this plate was made between 1945 and 1952, the years of the American occupation of Japan following World War II, although we do not know the exact year of manufacture nor the name of the Japanese company who made this. We've provided 6 images including close-ups of the central hand painting, the souvenir designation, the occupied japan signature on the backside and one of the reticulation. Please note that the white "hot spots" are lighting reflection from the camera on the glossy surfaces. Also, the image of the full front side of the plate was not shot "head on" since that created a lighting reflection in the center of the plate, so this image looks somewhat "shortened" or narrower than the plate is in person. The lighting also dampens the intensity of the painted coloring a bit...the plate colors look richer and more beautiful in person than in the images.
Wonderful overall condition, with no chips or cracks or crazing and all reticulated openings in great shape, but not mint...the piece does show some slight wear and age, but this doesn't detract from the terrific look. There is gold wear to both the inner line and the outer edging decoration which you can see a bit of in the close-up images. While definitely there is wear, the gold is still very largely there on the plate, and we don't feel this detracts, but you will see the wear in person. The central hand painted area, however, is in excellent shape. There is a touch of orange in the blue sky in one spot, perhaps this is paint transfer from the rock area or perhaps this is a bit of wear/staining on the plate, we don't know. There is also some darkening/age wear on the underside rim on which the piece sits.
A great vintage piece to add to any collection of Florida souvenirs or Florida souvenir china or Florida memorabilia, particularly relating to the city of Miami or items having flamingos on them. Also a nice addition for anyone collecting old things relating to flamingoes in particular, or collecting Occupied Japan items overall. |
