This signed Nippon 7 1/2" vase is interesting as well as beautiful. Carrying the green wreath mark, it must be from around 1918-1921 before the mark changed to the Noritake green wreath mark. Though the shape of a double gourd vase is an older style, the decoration surely isn't!

Four vertical bands with a black background and light green leaves and delicate pastel pink poppy blossoms, all gold traced alternate with four white vertical panels in which 24K gold garlands and draping of gold blossoms are done in heavy gold. It looks like the same prunus blossoms which would later decorate Noritake's famous White & Gold pattern of dinnerware in the 1921-1925 period.

This piece has some normal wear to the gold on the rim and corresponding decorative bands on the throat of the vase, but there is no paint loss at all. The heavy gold flowers remain lustruous. All in all, a very interesting piece of Japanese decorative art from the Noritake company in its Nippon period.

I am a long time member of the Noritake Collectors Society. Come read about our great club, our newsletter and consider joining us in our appreciation and pursuit of Noritake!
