  • Antique 1885 Book Print, New York City Harbor & Elevated Railroad

Avis Yuni Antiques & Collectibles

Circa: 1885
Manufacturer: R. Worthington Publishers
Neat original 2 sided book illustration from 1885 edition of Picturesque Tours in America, the Junior United Tourist Club, edited by the Rev. Edward T. Bromfield, published by R. Worthington, NY. The date does not appear on-page but was present on the book's title page from which this came and we guarantee the age and what this is. The book was not in good shape so the good pages/book prints were removed and are being sold individually. Please see our other listings for the other pages available.

Measures about 7 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches. This page has two separate pictures, one on each side. One is labelled at the bottom to be of "New York Harbor", showing many boats on water with buildings in the far distance behind them. Some seem to be clipper ships with multiple sails, others are of other types of ships, with several small rowboats in the foreground carrying people, as if the rowboats are ferrying people from the larger ships to the shore, or vice versa. On the other side of the page is a "View of Elevated Railroad" with horse drawn carriages passing under the elevated railroad tracks. Both pictures are black and white line drawings (not photographs, no color on page). On the harbor view, the name, "A. Sargent" appears/is printed on the lower right, with what looks to be "T. A. Weber" on the lower left. On the railroad view, "RR CO" appears on the lower right on the picture, with perhaps another letter in front of this but we can't make that out for sure. We have provided an image of each book page side, as best we could show them.

Excellent condition for age. Pages have likely darkened over time, with some browning at outer edges. There is perhaps very minor page wear as expected, but nothing to worry about here. At least one page edge has been trimmed where it was removed from the book.
