Large signed landscape oil painting. Signed: F. Wisternigg. The signature is a bit hard to make out. Backside has a Hudsons framing label. J.L. Hudson's went out of business in MI many years ago. There is also a stamped date on back that looks like Nov. 8, 1950. This painting in the frame is 31.25 wide x 25.5 tall. Good condition. There is an F. Wisternigg listed in Davenports but that artist is a 19th C artist. Perhaps this artist was born in the late 1800's and worked through the 50's and onward. This painting is much more attractive than the pictures are showing it. USA only. 4/07ddau-V

The label on the back reads F. McJannet 5 Cragsland Park Great Urswick Ulverston Studio Tarn Close. The painting measures 16 by 20 inches and the frame measures 20 by 24 and one half inches. The villages of Great Urswick and Little Urswick, together called Urswick, are located in the Furness peninsula, part of the county of Cumbria in the United Kingdom. They are situated to the south-west of the town of Ulverston. Great Urswick is situated along the north and west sides of Urswick Tarn, a modest body of water (c. 1100 feet by 600), although the largest such natural body in Low Furness. The tarn is fed from the surrounding hills and feeds Gleaston Beck to the south, the water is said to have a red hue due to the iron content of the surrounding land. Little Urswick, the smaller of the two settlements, stands further south on the lower slopes of a limestone outcrop known as Bolton Heads. Taken from Wikepedia Shipping extra. Antique signed oil painted candle shield. Bottom of ormolu? base has incised mark that reads 'OOPER'; lst letter is worn off, but in the photo you can make out an 'H'. (Attributed to Henry Hooper, a well-known Boston Mfg. of brass, bronze and metalworks). Painting is signed 'Peterboro'. Stunning fine art, oil painting on board. The painting features a church; windmill, cottage; women and children, etc. Painting has all over striations/crazing. One tiny area appears to be just about ready to flake off just above the windmill, (a professional can correct that very easily). The painting is attached to an metal base which has a lever to adjust the shield up or down. In down position this item stands 15.75 tall x 9 wide, (small painting, but truly beautiful!). Candle shields were used to deflect heat away from a person seated near a candle. It is a wonderful, unique item; a work of art for the discriminating consumer! Pastel In Original Frame Signed Chandler Circa 1925
RARE SEASCAPE pastel in 17 X 31inch frame with some losses to color at corners with 13 3/4inch X 27 1/2inch sight dimension for seascape image. Image is in fine condition and signed in lower right corner. William Henry Chandler The chalk used on Chandler pastels was imported from France in a variety of colors. A Chandler employee then blended these imported colors into a wide variety of bright and pleasing pastel colors, adding a bonding liquid, and then molding the chalks into easily-usable pastel sticks. The same employee prepped the various sized pastel boards before use, preparing them with glue and sand so the final pastel colors would adhere better. After the picture was completed by the artist, it would be sprayed with a fixative to help the chalk to adhere better, and then usually sent to be framed by Frank. Most Chandler pastels come in the form of landscapes. Although supposedly modeled after the rivers and mountains of New York or New England, in my opinion many seem to be modeled after places much farther away. Most landscapes feature some form of water such as a lake, stream, river, or waterfalls. Mountains were usually included, often with another focal point such as a cabin, house, trees, mill, boats, cottages, etc. Flying birds or sailboats were often added in the distance for visual effect. Chandler's most uncommon scenes include such topics as floral still lifes, fruit bowls, and hanging wild game such as fish or rabbits. We have even seen a still life with a fish bowl on a table. Chandler ocean seascapes and foreign scenes are also considered rare. Chandler pastels were sold through art stores, art dealers, gift shops and department stores such as Marshall Fields, Sears, Higbee's and The May Company in the United States, and through Simpson's, Eaton's, and Hudson Bay in Canada. Chandler prints were sold through the Taber-Prang print catalog and through various calendar and print publishers. Initial sales contacts were made by Frank Chandler, other sales representatives, and often by Chandler himself. As his reputation grew, Chandler exhibited his work at the 1900-01 International Exposition in Paris. His name appeared on the membership list of the prestigious Century Association of New York, among other professional groups. A signed Chandler pastel even hangs today in the Royal British Columbia Museum Parliament Buildings in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Between 1917-1918 Chandler spent a limited time in Canada producing his work. Apparently around that time Canada had levied a 25% import tax on certain American goods which made it prohibitively expensive to import certain goods from the U.S. into Canada. Some American businesses attempted to set up a Canadian subsidiary in order to avoid this import tax (e.g., Wallace Nutting briefly set up a Canadian operation). However, Chandler's Canadian operation was short-lived and he returned to New York after only a few months. TITLES: Most Chandler pastels seem to be untitled. Whereas Chandler prints would have been given a title by the publisher to assist in sales or smaller, most were in the 14x18inch, 16x20inch, 20x24inch; size, or larger. And it was quite common to over-mat a pastel thereby requiring an even larger frame. Quite often Chandler pastels were framed in large ornate frames, which more often than not are damaged today. SIGNED VS. UN-SIGNED CHANDLER PASTELS: In our opinion there are a significant number of [Un-Signed] original Chandler pastels still in circulation. According to Peter Neeley, when Chandler pastels were produced in pairs, usually only one was signed. And since most [pairs] have been broken up over the last 100 years, that would mean many original Chandlers are un-signed today. And although Chandler himself most likely signed all of his own art, it would also be our opinion that a fair number of original Chandler pastels completed by one of his employees may have left the studio un-signed.

Vintage landscape oil painting. Likely antique, oil painting on board. It features a landscape setting with a stream, 2 children and one adult standing near a log in the stream. I did not remove the pic to see if it is signed but it is possible. This painting has some condition problems. The painting is bulging in areas, (from moisture?); it is dirty; and there are 2 visible scratch lines on it. It is 15 wide x 12 tall. The painting on it is really well done despite the flaws, but price is reduced for the flaws. A more ornate frame would really do a lot for this painting.

Abstract modern art watercolor on paper board by Sculptor and graphic artist Lovet-Lorski was born in Lithuania in 1894 1894 Died 1973. Studied art at the Imperial Academy of Art in St. Petersburg where he worked briefly as an architect. In 1920, Lovet-Lorski moved to the United States and settled in New York City and in five years hence received his American citizenship. During his working life, he achieved prominence as a Modernist sculptor but in view of the fact that his work was mainly commissioned by private clients, his work began to slip into obscurity. A decade after his death, a large selection of his major works of the 1920s and 1930s was discovered in his New York atelier bringing his art into prominence once again. Lovet-Lorski's style was eclectic but his work in the Modern style is the most individualistic and impressive. The female nude became his subject whether in marble or as a lithographic print. Alastair Duncan has written: the bold sweep of the body capturing its innate rhythm and grace...his torsos convey a feeling of motion and energy, no doubt partly due to the simplifying and streamlining of facial features and hair. No other sculptor in America caught the prevailing French Art Deco mood as effectively or poignantly. He was an associate member of the National Academy of Design and a member of the National Sculpture Society, as well as the Salons of Paris. His work is held in the collections of the Luxembourg Museum, Paris; Petit Palais, Paris; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; British Museum, London; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; San Diego Fine Arts Society; Los Angeles Museum of Art; Seattle Art Museum; San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts; Boston University; and Columbia University. During that trip to Skye, Palmer fell in love with the people and their customs - and with the beautiful but stark environment, bathed in a quality of light that proved irresistible to the landscape painter. As she said: I found a landscape I could paint for a lifetime. Palmer returned to Skye every year until 1995, when she made the dramatic decision to take her life savings and move there on an artist's visa. During that period Palmer painted full-time, returning to New Hampshire in May, 1997. The Isle of Skye: Paintings by Sherry Palmer will contain many of the oil and watercolor paintings completed during her Scottish residency. A painter who prefers to work outdoors, Palmer describes her work: I love being, on the marsh, in the fields, in the hills, and responding to what I see in front of me. Palmer's paintings are characterized by fluid brushstrokes that convey rich colors and an ethereal, all-encompassing light.
