The Harvard Medical College professor who was hanged for murder! (1793-1850) John White Webster was born in Boston to a well connected New England family. He studied medicine at Harvard Medical School graduating in 1815. After commencing a private medical practice in Boston, Webster was unable to make a success of it so he decided to make a career change, and in 1824, he was appointed a lecturer of chemistry at Harvard. Promoted to professor in 1827, he continued to lecture and at the same time he published chemistry books. He was arrested on November 30, 1849, and charged with the murder of Doctor George Parkman, who he owed a great deal of money to. Webster was convicted in March 1850, and hanged in August 1850. The Webster murder case was highly publicized and very noteworthy not only because it involved well known Boston men, but because it was one of the first cases that used forensic evidence to identify a body. Engraved portrait, 3 1/2 x 4, tipped to a 6 x 9 1/4 album page. Excellent.

The vintage print was drawn by Andrew Paul Dedula as part of his Drawings of Historic America series and distributed by his Andrew Paul Studios of Sugarcreek, Ohio. The name of the location is shown across the bottom of the print, The Incline to Mt. Washington, Pittsburgh, Penn. On the building shown prominently in the print itself, the building is labeled Duquesne Incline . In the lower left corner on the front side appears the numbering 38/2500 or this is number 38 of a print run of 2,500. In the lower right corner appears the artist's printed name with the date, Jun. 89 or June 1989, under which he has signed his name. The black and white print drawing with hand coloring is encased in a double, two-toned green matte, then placed under glass in a raised line gold colored presumably wood frame. The overall size of the frame is about 9 1/8 x 11 1/4 inches. The visible print within the mattes measures about 4 x 6 inches. This print was professionally framed by House of 10,000 Frames, whose sticker appears on the back side paper. Most interestingly, a pocket was included on the back side to hold two separate pieces of literature related to the artist. One gives a biography/background on the artist himself. The second piece is a folded 4 sided card or leaflet which, on the inside, lists all the prints available in the Andrew Paul Drawings of Historic America series (at least, all prints available at the time this print was purchased, and we don't know when that was....this came out of a home). In this listing the Mt. Washington Incline print is referenced, called here the Duquense Incline of Pittsburgh. The backside of this folder provides more detail on the Historic America series itself. Here is some of what is stated about this series on this leaflet: This collection represents some of America's most well known and treasured landmarks throughout the country. These detailed drawings are drawn by Andrew Paul Dedula who has traveled to each one of these places to draw and paint. The drawing is printed in black and white and then are individually handcolored to give the drawing a feeling of 'aliveness' and color harmony that is fresh and real. Each piece is certified, signed, and numbered in limited edition. To that last statement, we can't see any of that raised certification showing on the front side of this print. We have provided 7 images to try and show print details as well as the informational leaflets/pages. Please note that the white hot spots are reflections from the camera lighting on the glass. This piece is in excellent condition. We are selling as is/as found and have not opened up the frame, but the print looks bright and colorful and in great shape, as does the mattes, frame, glass, etc. The white dots on the back side of the frame are raised bumpers to keep from scratching the wall when hung. There is a small punched in tear in the back side paper covering the rear of the frame near the top. For shipping purposes, this framed print weighs over one pound unpacked. Please note that we are also separately listing a second print in this series which we got out of the same home, New Orleans Street Car, Louisiana. If you are interested in both framed pictures, please contact us prior to placing the order. The shipping information has been inputted for each picture separately, and will not calculate the combined shipping discount you would receive when shipping both of these together in one package. We will need to calculate that for you.

1800s Bufford's Oil Chromo Boston Framed Print Lithograph, Young Girls
Wonderful framed antique chromolithograph or print from ca. mid 1800's of two young girls who appear to be holding some cherries. There is a tree and a ladder in the background so perhaps they had just picked the cherries from the tree. Print retains beautiful muted color and is fully visible in the glass of the frame (print appears to sit on top of a gold colored matte board, or is attached to the matte on its backside). Since it is in a sealed frame we don't know if this is the original size of the print or whether it has been trimmed to be inserted in this frame. The lithograph itself appears to be in excellent condition with just a touch of edge chipping/damage on the upper right side. The antique print is signed/marked on the topside lower right with Bufford's Oil Chromo Boston . Some of these letters are a bit hard to read but from looking at other pieces by this firm we believe this is what is shown. From a little bit of internet research, John H. Bufford operated Bufford's Lithographic aged we do not believe this print originally was sold in this frame but was likely put in the frame much more recently. However, to ua the gold coloring to the wood frame is a lovely compliment to the gold type image coloring of the lithograph itself, and despite the frame damage, the print appears to work well with this frame. One might be able to touch up or otherwise fix up the frame damage but we are selling this as is/as found with its Shabby Chic appearance. Please note that the white hot spots in some of the images are reflections from the camera lighting on the glass. This lighting also lessens the intensity of the coloring of the print....it is darker and richer in color in person than what we can show here. Sorry, but this was the best our camera could depict. A lovely antique print despite the frame flaws which could work well in a girl's room or with other antique related décor. For shipping purposes, this framed antique lithograph weighs one pound unpacked.
