(1794-1865) Famous American orator and statesman. He made many famous speeches for the Union cause, the best known being his 2 hour oration preceding President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery. He also served as U.S. Congressman, Governor of Massachusetts, Minister to Great Britain, President of Harvard University, Secretary of State and U.S. Senator.

Boston, 26 Oct. 1858

My dear Sir,

I enclose the receipt of the Treasurer of the Mount Fund for the amount accruing at Bridgewater last evening, which is much larger than I expected.

* Artemas Hale, the recipient of this letter, served in the Massachusetts State House of Representatives in 1824, 1825, 1827, and 1828, and 1838-42; served in the Massachusetts State Senate, 1833-34; U.S. Congressman, 1845-49; presidential elector on the Republican ticket in 1864; died in Bridgewater, Mass., August 3, 1882; interment in Mount Prospect Cemetery.
