Hopkins L. Turney: (1797-1851) Born at Dixon Springs, Smith County, Tennessee, he fought in the Seminole War in 1818. He studied law, admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Jasper, Tenn.; moved to Winchester, Tenn., and continued with his law practice. Served as a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, 1828-38. Served as U.S. Congressman, 1837-43, and U.S. Senator, 1845-51. He was the chairman of the Committee on Retrenchment, and also served on the Committee on Patents and the Patent Office.

Signature With State: 6 1/2 x 1 3/4, in ink, Tennessee [the one written above the signature is in another hand], H.L. Turney, Tennessee [his name and Tennessee written below the autograph are written in the hand of Turney].


On the reverse side is a second autograph, that of United States Congressman William M. Cocke of Tennessee.

William M. Cocke: (1815-96) Born in Rutledge, Grainger County, Tenn., he pursued classical studies and graduated from East Tennessee College at Knoxville. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced in Rutledge and Nashville. Served as a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, and later as a U.S. Congressman, 1845-49. Was chairman of the Committee on Revolutionary Pensions. Afterwards he held many local and State offices, dying in Nashville in 1896.
