If you're worried about the economy and concerned about how you'll continue to feed your family hearty, healthy meals, here's a copy of Louise Newton's Good Recipes for Hard Times, a cookbook for people on a limited budget. Dedicated to the idea that a cook's first duty is to give people something to look forward to three times a day - however slim the food budget, it features traditional country recipes from across America and Europe. The first section, Hard Times, is divided into sections on beans, rice, corn, wheat, eggs and cheese, with recipes that provide enjoyable, well-balanced foods without necessarily including meat. The second half of the book covers everything from soups to main courses to desserts, with separate chapters on sauces and on the author's special ways of preparing vegetables. Published in 1975 by Houghton-Mifflin, the hardbound First Edition has 149 pages. This copy is in Very Good condition with a small bruise at bottom of front and a previous owner's name handwritten inside the front. The dust jacket is Very Good with no defects beyond slight edge wear. This book is the 'real deal' if you're short of money, and have a large (or small) family to feed. You'll find a lot of tasty, healthy, low-cost recipes between the covers!
This 1970 cookbook contains recipes by past and present members of the Congressional Club, which was essentially formed as a ladies' social club for the wives of US Senators and Congressmen. Since the first edition in 1927, one of the main activities of the club was publishing the Congressional Club Cookbook. This 1970 edition is the eighth and includes a foreword by then-First Lady, Pat Nixon. The 660-plus page book has many hundreds of recipes submitted by spouses of current and past Senators, Congressmen, Supreme Court Justices, state Governors, Ambassadors, and Cabinet members, as well as former First Ladies. There's also a section of recipes submitted by the men themselves. Though there were a small handful of women in Congress in 1970, there are no recipes submitted by them or there spouses in the cookbook. Each recipe is accompanied by a replica signature of the submitter. The book has a few tiny scuffs on the cover but no damage, tears, stains, or writing. There are several pages of period advertising at the front and back of the book. Shipping will be via Media Mail - please choose the lowest rate for your zip code in the shipping calculator. No international shipping on this item.
