The Water Babies Vintage 1907 Book By Charles Kingsley
Vintage 1907 hardcover book, The Water Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby, written by Charles Kinglsy, New Edition published by The Macmillan Co., in excellent condition. It has a gorgeous blue cover with gilt lettering and is fully illustrated. The inside front cover is inscribed Dorothy Drought, July 12, 1911. Written in 1862-63 as a serial for Macmillan's Magazine, it was first published in its entirety in 1863. It was written as part satire in support of Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species. The book was extremely popular in England, and was a mainstay of British children's literature for many decades, but eventually fell out of favour in part due to its prejudices (common at the time) against Irish, Jews and Americans. The protagonist is Tom, a young chimney sweep, who falls into a river after encountering an upper-class girl named Ellie and being chased out of her house. There he drowns and is transformed into a water baby , as he is told by a caddisfly - an insect that sheds its skin - and begins his moral education. The story is thematically concerned with Christian redemption, though Kingsley also uses the book to argue that England treats its poor badly, and to question child labour, among other themes. Enjoy!

Illustrated cloth boards moderately rubbed, previous owner's name endpaper, rough cut edges with mild tanning A yellow peril novel (told in a series of interconnected episodes) chronicling the evil career of the sadistic and powerful Quong Lung in San Francisco's Chinatown underworld. Portions of the book originally appeared in 1897 and 1898 as prize-winning short stories in the San Francisco Examiner and the Argonaut. Quong Lung's pastimes include extortion, kidnapping, subversion of the Chinese Exclusion Act, slavery, prostitution, revenge, and murder. Late in the book, it is revealed that Quong Lung is Yale-educated. Coincidence? Although many Chinese characters are portrayed sympathetically as innocent victims, insight into the author's point of view can be found in a brief but telling preface: This book does not set forth to be that detestable thing, a 'book with a purpose'; but if it should incidentally draw attention to the terrible conditions of life of the slave girls in Chinatown, and if any amelioration of those conditions should ensue, I shall feel that I have not written in vain Of course, the best thing to do with Chinatown would be to burn it down; but the scheme is too Utopian to be discussed in a mere preface.
Wraps exhibit mild handling, 255 pages, in Near Fine condition The Intuitionist is a novel which falls broadly into speculative fiction and takes place in a city (implicitly, New York) full of skyscrapers and other buildings requiring vertical transportation in the form of elevators. The time, never identified explicitly, is one when black people are called colored and integration is a current topic. The protagonist is Lila Mae Watson, an elevator inspector of the Intuitionist school. The Intuitionists practice an inspecting method by which they ride in an elevator and intuit the state of the elevator and its related systems. The competing school, the Empiricists, insists upon traditional instrument-based verification of the condition of the elevator. Watson is the second black inspector and the first black female inspector in the city. The book contains many images of lifting and falling, and the concept of the elevator, of uplift , is perhaps a metaphor for racial progress.

The novel ties together three separate narratives using letters and oral accounts - that of Paul's mentor in the 1930s, that of Paul in the 1950s, and that of the narrator herself in the 1970s. The tale is told primarily from the perspective of Paul's daughter, who is never named.

Pencil writing of each owner's name on the inside of the front cover and cover page-HARVEY PECK on one and the other one is MARTIN RUSSELL Brightlook Hospital, Aug 28, 1916.
