The American Cut Glass Industry By Jane Shadel Spillman
This authoritative book presents new information about the late 19th- and early 20th-century cut glass industry in Corning, New York. The recent discovery of a mass of archival material relating to T.G. Hawkes and Company, including thousands of letters, has enabled the author to research business practices in the glass industry in more detail than ever before. Using this new information, together with her already considerable knowledge, Jane Shadel Spillman has produced the first book on American cut glass to go beyond the glass and examine the workings of the industry itself, including labor relations, sources of blanks, special orders for the White House, Hawkes's representation at the Paris world's fair in 1889, and communication between the cut glass industry and silver manufacturers such as Gorham and Tiffany. Competition and cooperation between the glass cutting firms are also highlighted, and considerable attention is paid to other companies, such as J. Hoare, H.P. Sinclaire, and O.F. Egginton. There are 512 illustrations of glass pieces, catalog pages, advertisements and old documents, including 80 colour plates. This is a book which will be of special interest to collectors of cut glass, and also to students of business and social history.

Jewellery Reference & Price Guide By Michael Poynder
Originally published in 1976, The Price Guide to Jewellery has undergone numerous reprints and is now reissued in a new edition. It is universally acknowledged as one of the most useful and informative books on the subject ever written. Precious stones and metals possess a universal appeal although jewellery is often considered as being very expensive and beyond the normal pocket. Accordingly, the author is at pains to include a comprehensive selection of jewellery from all periods and at all price ranges. Most of the pieces shown are, or have been, on sale in particular shops, or have passed through the salerooms. Jeweller prices vary with individual pieces according to value of materials, workmanship and availability. The prices shown are within a bracket which the private individual might expect to have to pay when buying from a retail business and all have been carefully checked and brought up to date through consultation with a wide variety of London jewellers. The book is arranged chronologically as far as possible in terms of both date and style. The author also relates the number of illustrations directly to the type of jewellery most readily available and the largest number of colour plates to the most prolific period of production. For this reason nineteenth century rings will obviously outnumber those produced, say, during the Anglo-Saxon period. Profusely illustrated in colour and black and white, with detailed captions, this book invaluable for identification and a source of long-term reference. The Author Michael Poynder, Ph.D., joined the jewellery business with Harvey & Gore in 1962. From 1965 to 1970 he had a shop in Beauchamp Place, London, and later in Sloane Street. In the 1980,s he was the jewellery and silver expert of a fine art valuation team. Following the death of his wife, he moved to Ireland and has concentrated on alternative medicine, being awarded a Ph.D. by the Indian International Institute of Alternative Medicine for his work in geopathic and personal stress. Jewellery: Reference and Price Guide, has been the standard work on the subject since it was first published in 1976. Michele Rowan has been a dealer in jewellery at Antiquarius in London for the past ten years. A graduate of history from Sydney University she previously taught history in Australia.

The history of great diamonds is intimately interwoven with the lives of emperors and conquerors, great kings and queens, with statesmen and soldiers, the rich and worldy - but also, inevitably, with those who lead more shadowy lives. They have been objects of passion, As well as being objects of exceptional beauty and rarity, they were once thought to posses magical properties which protected their owners from enemies. Initially a male prerogative, reflecting status and authority, they later adorned the wives of powerful men, and at times were offered as influential gifts. Few are immune to the temptation od diamonds; many sacrificed their lives and souls to them. In the past decade some historical diamonds have resurfaced, whilst the market has also seen an unprecedented arrival of 'fancy-colour' and modern gemstones, amonst them some of the biggest and finest ever seen. In this updated fourth edition of 'Famous Diamonds', Ian Balfour tells the fascinating stories of almost eighty of these remarkable gems. Some have detailed histories that can be traced from the present day back to the moment thay were mined, while others have a more mysterious past or have disappeared from view. Also included are shorter entries on a further selection of some forty notable diamonds

Understanding Jewellery By David Bennett & Daniela Mascetti
Understanding Jewellery David Bennett & Daniela Mascetti The Book -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This essentially practical book, Understanding Jewellery, now available in a revised and fully updated third edition, is unique in explaining why jewellery values vary and the individual points important for each category. A major section is devoted to the identification of the principal gem-stones and the testing methods to assess quality and detect fakes. Explanations are given in a straightforward, uncomplicated manner with a text largely linked directly to specific illustrations. This makes the assimilation of the information much easier than in traditional text dominated books. The authors, both Sotheby's jewellery experts, evaluate many millions of pounds' worth annually and thus handle a complete cross-section of what is available on the market. They have specially selected the hundreds of superb colour illustrations to show what to look for and, equally important, what to avoid. Whether interested in the history of fashion, deciding what to buy or simply to enjoy a visual feast of beautiful objects, this book will serve as an invaluable reference and represents outstanding value. New revised and updated edition of a classic ACC book Over 100 new colour illustrations Brings together in one volume identification, dating and valuation of jewellery made in the last 200 years Almost 1,000 superb colour illustrations to help facilitate identification and understanding Written in straightforward, non-technical English, with a new chapter to bring the book into the twenty-first century The section on gemstones includes imitations and pastes. Of Wolves and Men Barry Holstun Lopez What wolves do excites men and precipitates strong emotions, especially if men feel their lives or the lives of their domestic animals are threatened.
