This classic novel by Verne which tells of a group of men who set out to locate a sea monster, encounter instead a futuristic submarine and a mysterious Captain Nemo. Published by John W. Lovell, who was known for ignoring copyright laws and printing his own cheap editions of classic novels by pirating the work of such notable authors as Dickens, Thackeray, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Milton, etc., and distributing them from various branches and subsidiaries in the United States and London. This is one of the pirated editions and lacks a publication date, though there is a penciled date 1880 written on the title page. In The Publisher's Weekly, June 18, 1881, appears an advertisement Lovell's Caxton Classics, A series of the best books in Poetry, History, Biography, Fiction, etc., designed to meet the wants of those who desire the works of the best authors in an inexpensive, but at the same time neat and durable form.
