  • Bramble Bush & Bells 1915 Mother Goose Antique Book Print Volland Ed

Avis Yuni Antiques & Collectibles

Circa: 1915
Manufacturer: M. A. Donohue & Company
Antique original 1915 book page illustrations from 'Mother Goose', re-arranged and edited by Eulalie Osgood Grover, illustrated by Frederick Richardson, Volland Popular Edition, published by M. A. Donohue & Company. Not a reproduction, but page from an old 1915 issue of this book (we guarantee this), with an antique print on each side of the page (the book covers were in bad shape so the interior pages were removed). Wonderful vintage prints which illustrate well known nursey rhymes with colorful pictures of children, animals and adults, with on-page copy of the rhyme in a box. Two-sided, different rhymes on each side, with a page size including the white border area around the print of generally about 10 to 10 1/2 inches high x 7 3/4 to 8 inches wide. The prints are a standard rectangular shape but have been shot at an angle (rather than "straight down") which gives the angular look in the images. Excellent condition with bright coloring, but please note that the page edges have been trimmed on many or all sides, and not always in a straight line. There is still sufficient white border areas on all sides to permit easy matting and framing in order to hang on a wall.

There are 23 total pages available, each listed and sold separately. Here we are listing the "There was a man in our town" and "You owe me five shillings, Say the bells of St. Helen's" back-to-back prints from the book. If you are not familiar with the first rhyme, it shows a man jumping into a bramble-bush which scratches out both his eyes. The second deals with how someone is to be paid and when, and in the process mentions bells hanging in what must be numerous churches by name (St. Helen's, Old Bailey, Shoreditch, Stepney, Bow, Whitechapel, St. Martin's, St. Ann's, St. Giles, St. Peter's, St. John's). If you need a listing of the exact words in the nursery rhymes (in case you are looking to match it to the way you remember it), please e-mail and that can be provided.

Make terrific gifts framed for children's rooms, play rooms, day care and nursery or school rooms, or for giving someone a print of an old rhyme which includes that person's name.
