Click here to enlarge image and see more about item cross001: gas fired flaming cross circa 1910 Religious? KKK? ???

Click for more detail...

cross001

gas fired flaming cross circa 1910 Religious? KKK? ??? This unusual item was found in a Pennsylvania home while cleaning out an estate. No one in the remaining family could tell us anything about this.
The cross is made of nickel plated brass and has a nipple to run a rubber tube to supply gas to the cross which has orifices on the vertical and horizontal tubes on only one side. The cross was clearly used many times as evident by the flame discoloration visible on the tubes [see images for view] The piece was obviously factory made and not of home construction.

Was this a gas light for some church/religious use?

Was this an early Ku Klux Klan artifact made for ceremonial use?

Research indicates; In 1547, Scottish clansmen used the Fiery Cross (Crann Tara) as a symbol of unity and loyalty. Whenever an emergency arose, such as an attack or attempted invasion by rivals, the clan chieftain would dispatch runners carrying Fiery Crosses to assemble the warriors for the battle. The last recorded use of the Fiery Cross was during the Jacobite Rising in 1745. Swedish clansmen had a similar communications system (Buþkafle).

After over 35+ years in this business, we have never seen anything like this. Please email if you know what the actual use was.

It should be noted that this is a flaming cross and not a burning cross. A burning cross consumes the cross and a flaming cross is never consumed.
