Case Histories (Victorian Photographic Portrait) by: John Hannavy Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. The cased photographic portrait was fashionable from the early 1840s until the end of the 1860s. Around it grew a considerable industry supplying everything from simple leather covered cases, to sophisticated creations in moulded thermoplastic. This book looks at the photographic portrait from daguerrotype to carte de visite, and at the range of cases in which it was marketed. The cased Victorian photographic portrait was a sophisticated product, with the delicate hand-colouring of the image echoed in the colours of the protective velvet pad and trim with which the case was finished. Hitherto, the relationship between the portrait and its packaging and presentation has not been explored in book form. Case Histories also highlights British manufacturers of cases and trims, and identifies the only British manufacturer yet found who made moulded thermoplastic cases. Such was the importance of the cased photographic portrait, that moulded picture cases were one of the worlds first uses for moulded plastic. A history of the packaging and presentation of the Victorian cased photographic portrait The first book to take a holistic view of the cased portraiture market Looks at the structure of the case and its evolution Explores the range of material used in case manufacture, the manufacturing techniques employed and the emergence of moulding technology

Images of America: Aubuchon Hardware by: Bernard Aubuchon Jr. Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. William E. Aubuchon Sr. immigrated to the United States from Canada in 1900 at the age of 15, speaking no English and armed with only a fifth-grade education. Through hard work and perseverance, he established a hardware store in 1908 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. One hundred years later, there are over 130 Aubuchon Hardware stores located throughout Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont, employing about 1,100 people. This remarkable growth by Aubuchon Hardware can be attributed to the company treating its customers as friends and always making them number one. As William E. Aubuchon Sr. once said, The business was founded on the principle of buying economically. We give our customers what they want: high-grade hardware at a price everyone can afford. Aubuchon Hardware never lost track of where it started, and today it still remains all in the family with over 20 family members currently employed, including the fourth generation. In Aubuchon Hardware, family members were an invaluable resource for photographs and historical information.

America and the Tintype by: Steven Kasher Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. One of the most intriguing and little studied forms of nineteenth-century photography is the tintype. Introduced in 1856 as a low-cost alternative to the daguerreotype and the albumen print, the tintype was widely marketed from the 1860s through the first decades of the twentieth century as the most popular photographic medium. The picture-making preference of the people, it was almost never used for celebrity portraiture: It was affordable, portable, unique and available almost everywhere. Because of its ubiquity, the tintype provides a startlingly candid record of the political upheavals that rocked the four decades following the American Civil War-and the personal anxieties they induced. As this book's author, Steven Kasher, argues, the tintype studio became a kind of performance space in which sitters could act out their personal identities. Sitters brought to the tintype studio not just their family and friends but also the tools of their trade, costumes, toys, stuffed animals and other such props. Often they would enact stereotypes and fantasies that reflected or challenged conventional gender, race and class roles. Surprisingly, the tintype was almost exclusively an American phenomenon, rarely used in other countries, and this book demonstrates how this modest form of photography provides extraordinary insight into the development of national attitudes and characteristics in the formative years of the early Modern era. Featured in this book are more than 200 remarkable examples of tintypes, mostly drawn from the Permanent Collection of the International Center of Photography in New York.

Military Photographs & How to Date Them by: Neil Storey Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Collector Bookstore Notes: Offers advice on identifying military uniforms, badges, insignia, ranks, medals and equipment worn by military ancestors. (British/ U.K.) Publishers Description: The military photographs in family albums stand out as different and distinctive and the sight of an ancestor in uniform stirs thoughts of what he or she did and where they served. However, because of the distance of time or the reticence of many old soldiers, the family historian can be left with many frustrating puzzles to solve when faced with an unlabelled photograph. But there are always clues and author Neil Storey offers advice on identifying military uniforms, badges, insignia, ranks, medals and the equipment worn by our military ancestors. These items can provide a wealth of information about the person or people in the photograph and can lead to many new avenues of research. This book covers the UK's military history from the 1870s to the 1940s with chapters on Soldiers of the Queen, The Edwardian soldier, the First World War, the Inter War years and the Second World War. Each chapter has an introduction followed by a wide range of photographs showing a good cross-section from all the services, corps and line infantry with helpful sections about how to interpret the clues revealed by uniform details. The book is profusely illustrated with over 230 photographs and offers a brilliant guide to dating our precious family heirlooms.

The Last Muster: Images of the Revolutionary War Generation by: Maureen Taylor Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. A remarkable work of documentary history, The Last Muster is a collection of rare nineteenth-century photographic images--primarily daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and carte des visite paper photographs--of the Revolutionary War generation. This extraordinary collection of images assigns faces to an un-illustrated war and tells the stories of our nation's founding fathers and mothers; updating and supplementing research last collected and published over a century ago. In her comprehensive introduction, author Maureen Taylor explains how she came to this project and collected the images. She also describes her exhaustive primary source research involved in dating and identifying each image and investigating the story and genealogy of each subject. The array of seventy images is expansive and includes veterans, loyalists, Native Americans, African Americans, children who witnessed battles and and soldiers, and women who nursed the wounded and even took up arms themselves. Although the faces that gaze at the reader are old and wizened, the stories they tell are of youthful bravery in the young days of the republic. The Last Muster is a much-needed contribution to the history of the American Revolution, the early Republic, and the history of Photography. Through these portraits and the accompanying narrative, readers will have the opportunity to relive the Revolutionary War.
