10841

Continental Kilns Tropical Pair 1950s Dinner Plates These terrifically retro early 1950s dinner plates are in the Tropical pattern by Continental Kilns, an Ohio River Valley pottery that manufactured dinnerware from 1944 to the mid 1950s. They are rounded square shape with notched corners, 10 inches diameter. Hand painted dark green and light brown leafy ferns are hand painted onto chartreuse green backgrounds.

Both plates are in excellent condition, still glossy with no damage or crazing. There are a few very faint, light marks in the centers from stacking and storage. Price is for the pair. I have a matching platter listed in this pattern.

Circa: 1950

Click for more detail...

8181

Crooksville 1941 Raggedy Ann and Andy Child's Feeding Dish Set A 3 piece child's pottery dinnerware feeding set featuring the original Raggedy Ann and Andy ragdoll characters created by Johnny Gruelle from the early 1940s, produced by Crooksville China. The shallow rimmed deep plate is 9" diameter by 1-1/4" deep, the cereal bowl is 5-1/4" diameter by just over 2" deep, and the mug is 3-1/4" high by 3" diameter.

All three pieces are very good condition for their age with no chips, cracks, flakes, or fleabites though you'll find some utensil scratches and other signs of use. The mug has some light crazing and there is mild to moderate wear to the gold band trim at the rims. The plate decal has some wear to Andy's face and the camel's forward knee area as shown. The bowl and plate are both marked in gold script underglaze "Raggedy Ann and Andy Ware by Crooksville, Copyright 1941 Johnny Gruelle Co.". The mug isn't marked.

About 8 inches tall by 8 inches wide.

The paint is just about perfect with no scratches or wear other than some mild wear to the gold trim on the handle. There are no chips or damage, and no crazing. The inside has no stains, wear, or signs of use. There are a couple of small, light smears of pink paint under the glaze at the rim, which occurred during manufacture.

12159

3 Gold Enameled Fancy Daisy Cake Plates, 1920s Japan I'd die for the full set that these beautiful hand painted and enameled antique daisy plates came from. There are three, probably once part of a dessert or tea set. The swirl-scalloped rim porcelain cake plates measure just over 6" diameter and are decorated with big yellow and white daisy flowers, green leaves, and maroon red ribbons. They are lavishly decorated with gold and white enamel petal outlining, beading, tassels, and eyelet ribbon over the bands of maroon around the well outlines. My pictures make them look duller than they really are - the colors just pop and the raised gold enameling catches the light, gives the plates a great dimensional effect.

The backs are backstamped in blue "M. Furuya Co. Yokohama Japan" with an M in diamond logo. Masajiro Furuya was a Seattle businessman from the 1890s until the start of the Depression in 1930. The mark is probably an importer's mark, my research didn't find any evidence that Furuya actually manufactured ceramics. I'm dating the plates from 1922 (when Nippon marks were replaced with Made in Japan) to 1928 or 1929. There's a little wear to a few of the maroon scallop tips at the edges of the delicate plates, otherwise they're in excellent condition, still glossy with no scratches or damage.

Click for more detail...

3569

Childs 1924 Uncle Wiggily Ovaltine Advertising Pottery Mug This 1924 child's cup or mug was an advertising premium for Ovaltine, made by Sebring Pottery. It features Uncle Wiggily (often misspelled Wiggly) and Grandpa Goosey Gander arm-in-arm with the "Ovaltine House" in the background. The artwork is signed Lang Campbell, the original illustrator of the Uncle Wiggily books and comic strips. On the back of the mug is Uncle Wiggily at a run with the words "Uncle Wiggily Wants His Ovaltine".

Juvenile advertising china pieces were usually giveaways or very low priced. They were produced inexpensively and were often not the highest quality - the kids cared about the characters, not the aesthetics of their dishes. The mug's handle has a thin, small stress separation at the base which is under glaze and occurred during manufacture. There is crazing, wear to the blue band at the rim, and some pinpoint glaze fleabites at the rim, a couple of which have caused minor staining. There is also some staining at the underside base. The mug has no cracks, hairlines or structural damage but it was apparently much loved and used by its owner.

1960s Treasure Craft Green Blue Pottery Oval Serving Platter 17.5 Inches This large oval Mid Century serving platter by Treasure Craft is gorgeous, with its woodgrain finish handles, flower and fruit raised relief decoration, and volcanic or lava drip type glaze in bright green and blue. It measures 17-1/2 by 8-3/4 inches. The handles have grape clusters on one end, apples on the other. The center has a mirror image, well detailed flowering blossom design surrounded by the dramatic peacock feather-like green and blue swirled drip glaze. The back is painted in the matte woodgrain finish with molded-in grain lines. It's marked Treasure Craft © Made in U.S.A. Perfect condition with no chips, scratches, or damage. 11556

Marcrest Brown Daisy Dot Covered Grease or Drippings Jar This 1950s stoneware covered dish in the Marcrest Brown Daisy or Daisy and Dot pattern by Western Stoneware was sold as a grease jar and is one of the more uncommon kitchenware pieces in the line. It's almost 5 inches high to the top of the lid knob (3-5/8" deep to the rim) by 5-1/4" diameter and holds 20 ounces, or 2-1/2 cups. It's in excellent condition, still shiny with no damage. The high gloss glaze reflects light (and fingerprints!) in the photos, the finish is not cloudy.

Click for more detail...

4938

Deep Purple Antique Porcelain Mug or Stein with Hand Painted Plums A tall unmarked late Victorian to early Edwardian era porcelain beer mug or stein with a dramatic hand painted plums decoration. The color below the fruit is what I'd call an indigo or cobalt purple, very deep and dark. It's hard to see with the heavy, dark glaze, but the mug blank has in-mold feather filigree designs at the base and handle, and there's a subtle paneled effect below the rim. About 6-1/4 inches high by 4-3/8 inches diameter at the bottom swell, 3" diameter at the rim.

There is some all-over crazing to the white areas which is slightly age stained in the bottom. Other than a pinprick size glaze skip or flake to the front center of the design opposite the handle, there is no damage or wear to the mug or the painted design.

Click for more detail...

3605

Walt Disney 3 Pigs 1930s Divided Childs Feeding Plate This very scarce 1930s 3-section juvenile feeding plate can be seen on page 82 of the original edition of Stern's Guide to Disney Collectibles. It's just under 8" diameter and has decaled illustrations of two of the original Disney cartoon Three Little Pigs plus the Big Bad Wolf in each of the plate sections. Each design is signed with the likeness of Walt Disney's signature.

The plate was made by Salem China Company under their Patriot China mark. The back is marked S.C. Co. Patriot China, Made in America, Mfgd. by permission Walt Disney Enterprises. The heavy plate has no chips, flakes, or hairlines but it does have stained crazing and there is quite a bit of wear and fading to the largest decal, the fiddling pig at the lower center. The wolf and other pig decals have much less wear. The black spot on the back to the right of the mark appears to be an impressed number 8 with an overabundance of ink.

9547-2

Thunderbird Tourist Pottery Cup or Tumbler I don't know who made this pottery tumbler or cup, but I've seen this same distinctive stenciled and airbrushed Native American style Thunderbird design on a wide variety of items. It's no doubt from a line of souvenir or tourist pottery from the American Southwest. The cup is robin's egg blue, slightly speckled, with the thunderbird design at the center front. It measures 3-1/2" high by 2-3/4" diameter and is slightly roly-poly in shape with no handles. The underside has incised Zia sun and cactus marks. Excellent condition with no damage or wear.

Click for more detail...

3575

Chrome and Porcelain 1930s Childs Covered Feeding Dish with Mexican Southwestern Theme This divided, 3-part childs warming bowl by Excello is chrome with a pottery insert, and it comes with a rare matching lid. The handles and lid finial are olive green Bakelite. This is a food warmer type bowl - it's designed to be filled with hot water to keep the baby's food warm, and the cover helps with that too. The dish is 8" diameter, 10-1/2" handle to handle, by 2" high to the rim (not including the lid).

In each of the divided sections is a different Southwestern scene - a boy wearing a sombrero with Mexican pottery, a girl in sombrero with a duck, and a Mexican village scene with cactus, palm tree, adobe buildings, a woman with a pot on her head, and a man with a burro. The cork stopper has a pink ceramic top and doesn't quite match - it may be a replacement. The dish dates to the 1930s and reflects the popular Mexicana or Mission Fiesta kitchen themes of the era.

The bowl has no chips or cracks but it is crazed, with staining to the craze lines on the left half of the dish. The chrome body and cover are shiny and clean, in excellent condition with no pitting or scratches, though there are a couple of very slight dings at the edges of the lid. The underside is marked Excello Chromium Made In U.S.A.
