11310

1960s Rubens Lady In White With Bird Figural Planter A beautiful, very well made figural lady planter by Rubens Originals from the 1960s. She's 6-3/8 inches high, wearing a gold-trimmed matte-finish white Southern Belle style long flouncy dress with embossed flowers and matching sunbonnet. She holds a closed parasol in one hand, her other hand is raised and holding a little white bird. Her hand painted face is tilted slightly with eyes looking upward, her red cupid's bow mouth has the hint of a smile.

Silk African violet flowers fill the planter section in the back. The underside has a red and gold foil label reading Rubens Originals© Los Angeles Made in Japan, and there is an impressed logo with the stock number 474M. The planter is in perfect condition with no damage or wear.

Circa: 1960

Click for more detail...

9872

Gilner Pixie Elf Grapes Wall Pocket This is a scarce wallpocket by Gilner Potteries of California, featuring one of their Happy People red pixies posed in the center of a cluster of chartreuse green grapes. The planter is about 6 inches wide by 8 inches high, the sitting pixie is 4". The back is marked Gilner Calif. and dated 1950.

There are no chips, flakes, crazing, or damage of any kind to the wall pocket - it's virtually mint. The pixie is in excellent condition as well with good paint and none of the usual soiling that often affects the unglazed bisque face. There are a couple of tiny pinpoint stray red specks to his face that occurred during the hand painting process. The fold of the pixie's hat tip has a little bit of dark green underglaze, also from manufacturing. The wall pocket is spotlessly clean inside and out, having never held soil or water. The white spots in the pictures are all from glare and reflections.

8680

Lefton Madonna And Child Figural Planter This lovely matte glazed porcelain figural planter by Lefton features the Virgin Mother with Baby Jesus in her arms. The planter is softly colored in pastel shades and is just over 6 inches high by about 5-1/2" diameter. There's a minor misapplication of gold paint to the rim of her halo on one side, barely noticeable. One tiny fleabite nick at the back of the planter under the rim, you can't even see it unless you look inside the opening. Marked underglaze Lefton 1765.

Click for more detail...

9832

Treasure Craft 1950s Santa in Sleigh Christmas Planter This is the very rare 1950s Santa Claus in sleigh ceramic planter made by Treasure Craft of California. Collectors of their Lucky Sprite line of pixie elf figurines are almost always delighted to find these Santas which bear a definite resemblance to the Treasure Craft pixies.

The hand molded, hand painted Santa sits with legs crossed in the seat of a dark green pottery sleigh which is 6 inches long by just over 3 inches high to the planter opening in the back. Santa is a little over 3-1/2" high. His beard, face, and the fur trim of his red suit is unglazed. There's a little minor discoloration to the face area but nothing I'd consider dirt or soiling. One cuff has some dark soil marks. Note the two unglazed white spots in his lap - I'm not sure if they're manufacturing flaws or intentional parts of his fur coat trim. There's one tiny glaze nick to the side edge of the curled front of the sleigh, visible in the last picture. Any other white spots in the photos are from reflections or glare. The planter has no markings, the original foil Treasure Craft label is missing.

Circa: 1953

9873

Gilner 1950 Pixie Elf in Green Apple Wall Pocket Delightfully kitschy wallpocket from Gilner Potteries of California with one of their Happy People red pixies posed in the heart shaped center recess of a chartreuse green apple or tomato (the dark green leaf looks more like a tomato leaf than an apple leaf to me). The planter is about 8 inches wide by 6 inches high, the sitting pixie is 4 inches. The back is marked Gilner Calif. and dated 1950.

There are no chips, flakes, crazing, or damage of any kind to the wall pocket - it's virtually mint. The pixie is in excellent condition as well with good paint and none of the usual soiling that often affects the unglazed bisque face. There is a faint, small line of red on his neck that occurred during the hand painting process. The wall pocket is spotlessly clean inside and out, having never held soil or water. The white spots in the pictures are all from glare and reflections.

11735

Inarco Ceramic Cherub Holding Seashell Soap Dish Planter Vase My aunt had one of these glazed white pottery cherubs in her main bathroom, holding guest soaps or wash cloths in the open shell top. It could also be used as a planter or vase. Made by Inarco in 1960s Japan, it's 11-1/2 inches tall and exquisitely molded, all off-white with a bit of light brown antiquing in the crevices. Other than a few tiny remnants of florist clay inside the bottom of the shell planter, the cherub figurine is in perfect condition with no damage or crazing. Original foil label is intact on the bottom, along with a green underglaze mark Inarco E-3046.

Circa: 1960s

3547

Figural Putti Cherubs Planter Vase with Applied Porcelain Roses Two sweet putti or cherubs with heads touching adorn this tree vase or planter, studded with applied spaghetti moss and red and yellow flowers. A large applied porcelain rose decorated the front. It's 4-1/2" high by 4-1/2" wide, marked "Made in Japan" on the underside.

The large rose petals have two small chips and some cold paint loss. The light reflections make the chips appear much more noticeable in the photo than they really are. Otherwise the vase is in very good condition, and still very displayable.

5463

Burro Or Donkey Pulling Cart Ceramic Wall Pocket A charming figural ceramic wall pocket planter in the form of a donkey or burro pulling a baskt on a cart. It's 5" tall by 6-1/2" wide. It has a glazed back with mild crazing visible only at the back and an unglazed foot, unmarked. My guess is it was made by a California pottery company, it's too heavy and well done to be a Japan import. There are two holes for hanging at the back, one behind the donkey's head and one at the upper center of the basket back. There's a tiny glaze skip on one ear but no chips, flakes, or cracks.

10507

California Pottery Red Pixie Elf on Mushrooms Figural Planter This wonderfully retro 1950s pixie planter isn't marked, but I believe it to have been made by A.C. Davey Pottery of Glendale California. It features a pixie figurine in red suit and cap sitting atop a dark green mushroom at the back of the planter. One elbow rests on his raised knee, his other foot rests on top of the second mushroom. The pixie has a hand painted unglazed bisque face. The planter is 6-1/4 inches tall by 6 inches wide by about 3 inches deep front to back. In excellent condition with no water stains or sediment inside, no damage or crazing.

8588

1940s Yona California Pottery Dutch Boy Flower Holder This 1940s dutch boy flower holder vase by Yona Ceramics of California is badly crazed but very attractive. The blond Dutch boy carries water buckets over his shoulder which form the vase openings. The hand painted design and distinctive shape resembles the work of Hedi Schoop, not surprising as Yona Lippin and her husband worked for Hedi before starting their own studio. Original label on the underside is torn but still present.

California Pottery Weil Ware Lady With Heart Flower Holder Vase This ceramic lady vase or flower holder figurine was made in the 1940s by Max Weil's California Figurine Co. She's 6-3/4 inches high, wearing a long flowered dress. Her flowered blue hat coordinates with the blue heart planter box held in her arms, where there is an opening for flowers. She could also be used to hold used razors or coins. The back has an embossed label reading California Figurine with the initials MWC for Max Weil Company. There is some crazing, no chips, flakes, or damage.

5572

Enesco Sleeping Angel in Clouds Figural Planter This sweet figural ceramic planter by Enesco features a barefoot baby angel holding a mandolin, asleep on a bed of clouds. I'm not sure if it's a girl or boy angel - the hair is boyish but the gown is a peachy pink color. The angel has a gold halo, gold trimmed mandolin and wings, and there are gold stars decorating the cloud planter. The planter is in excellent condition with no chips, flakes, water or soil stains, or other damage. It stands a little over 4" high by 4" wide. Red and gold foil Enesco Imports Japan label on the underside.

Click for more detail...

9033

Walker California Pottery Pixie Elf With Wheelbarrow Planter Walker Potteries of Monrovia California produced a line of elf or pixie figurines in the late 1940s, discontinuing them by 1952 - possibly due to their intense, unsettling appearance which was unlike most of the "cuter" styles produced by competitors. This one is pulling a wheelbarrow planter made of leaves and is 5 inches high by about 4-1/2" long. There's a little soil sediment inside the planter, otherwise it's in excellent condition with no damage. I'm including a different Walker pixie figurine as a bonus. It's 4" high, cradling a baby bunny in his arms. There's a small glaze chip to the pixie's left hand as shown.

Click for more detail...

5531

Hollywood Ceramics Clown on Train Engine Figural Nursery Planter This charming figural planter was probably a florist's nursery item, a houseplant gift to the parents of a new baby. Made in California by Hollywood Ceramics, a company more known for their modernistic Eames era designs, it features a waving clown sitting atop a pink and blue train engine with anthropomorphic face. The planter is 7-3/4" high to the top of the clown's hat, 5" high at the rim of the back opening and about 7" long overall. There is some wear to the cold paint of the clown's polka dot suit and red-mittened hands, as well as to some of the gold trim. The planter appears to have a fine, allover crackle glaze which may be age crazing but looks intentional. No chips, flakes, or cracks. The underside is marked "Hollywood Ceramics, Made in California ©".

Colonial Couple Pink Pottery Planter This vintage figural planter or cache pot features an old fashioned Colonial era couple seated on a bench. The lady holds a mandolin and the man holds a bouquet of flowers. The planter has a very pretty pink glaze and is just under 6 inches high by 4-3/4" wide. The back has the incised initials W (heart) K, the heart between the initials being pierced by an arrow. It was made by Cameron Clay Products of West Virginia. The planter is in excellent condition with just a tiny bit of water residue inside, no chips, flakes, hairlines or crazing.

5532

Figural Scotty Dog Planter I have no idea who made this vintage unmarked Scottie Scottish Terrier planter, no doubt one of the American Pottery companies of the 1930s through 1950s. It's 5-1/2" tall by about 5" wide, all off-white glazed with cold painted red mouth and green collar. I cannot tell if he was made like this or if he once had other paint that was worn off, there is some flaking to the existing paint. Still, he's a cute little guy and has no chips, crazing or damage, just some rust residue in the bottom of the planter.

Click for more detail...

12112

Pair Napco Great Horned Owl Ceramic Figural Planters These owl planter vases were made by Napco in the 1960s. They're about 6 inches high to the tops of their ears by about 7-1/2" long overall. The glaze is somewhat glossy, causing white spots in the photos that are not present on the planters. There is a little white paint transfer to the back of one owl, on the lower left side of the rock. That owl also has a small paint scratch to the back of the head, right along the rim opening edge. The other owl has a small flaked chip under his tail, virtually invisible unless viewed from below (see the closeup, picture number 3).

The bottoms are marked C-6565 Great Horned Owl. Each also has a price sticker reading Char-Ral Floral, Jackson Wyo. The original Napco Japan stickers are not present - these owls are also sometimes found with Napcoware stickers. They've been together for the past 50-some years so I'm selling them together, but I can sell them individually if you only want one.

9256

Pair Japan Christmas Angel Planter Vases This set of two porcelain ceramic Christmas spaghetti angel planters was made in 1950s Japan by TMJ. They are 4-3/4" high, standing in front of their holly-decorated planter vases. One is blond and carries a purse, candy cane, and wrapped presents. The brunette angel holds a parasol and a basket of holly. Both wear long hooded red capes with spaghetti fur trim.

The brunette angel is missing some spaghetti fur trim at the bottom of her cape. The back corner may have a piece broken off, it's hard to tell, but the front area near her parasol appears to be made that way. The way the figurine is painted indicates there never was any spaghetti trim in that area. I can't find any flaws, chips, or damage to the fur of the blond angel. The back of one hood and the red dresses have some minor loss or wear to the red paint, nothing serious. Both have their original foil labels reading "Supreme Quality TMJ Japan". Price is for the pair.

Click for more detail...

10119

Christmas Choir Boy Ceramic Wall Pocket Candle Holder Typically thought of as a Christmas decoration, this vintage Japan choir boy wall pocket is not specific to any holiday and can be displayed year round. It's 6-1/4" high by about 6 inches wide, featuring a choir boy holding a song book in his extended hands, framed against a stained glass arched church or cathedral window. At either side of the base are candle holders sized to fit regular taper candles, and the back is a planter with a hole for hanging on the wall (or it can rest flat on a surface of course).

The underside has a red and gold foil label with an image of a pine tree and K-T Japan. Red felt once covered the bottom, the remains of which can be seen around the bottom edges. There are no chips or cracks but the wall pocket is heavily crazed with considerable staining to the back and interior of the planter, some to the candle cups as well. There are many methods of removing the stains such as hydrogen peroxide, Oxy-Clean, etc. but I will let the buyer determine whether and how to do this.
