11540

Cotton Batting Santa Claus in Mica Canoe Christmas Ornament This wonderful antique Christmas ornament features a molded composition or clay face Santa Claus figure riding in a mica glittered cardboard canoe. The Santa figure has a faded red suit made of cotton batting, a white cotton beard, and old cotton pipe cleaner chenille "fur" trim around his cap.The heavy, stiff cardboard canoe is 4-1/2 inches long, heavily encrusted in thick mica glitter. Crinkled thin gold wire is attached to each end for hanging on the tree.

There are no labels or markings - this type of decoration was made in both Germany and Japan between the two World Wars, 1918 to mid 1930s. A similar ornament can be seen on page 148 of Robert Brenner's Christmas Revisited price guide book, but it doesn't state the country of origin. The canoe is in very good condition with no damage and very little mica loss. The Santa figure's black paper belt has some wear.

Click for more detail...

11994

3 Clay Face Chenille and Pinecone Christmas Gnomes Three exceptionally nice old chenille pine cone Christmas putz gnome figures from the 1940s - 1950s. I've seen this type of gnome on pinecone gnome lights from Italy, though the faces are also similar to German made putz gnomes, so I'm not sure where they were made - the bottoms are not marked.

The blue one has bent legs and is a little shorter, the other two gnomes are a little over 4 inches high. The bodies are made of white paint frosted pine cones, their arms and legs are brightly colored fluffy, thick chenille - turquoise blue, bright yellow, and light green. They have molded composition hats with hangers at the tops so you can use them as tree ornaments, or display them standing on their white mica glitter cardboard disc bases. Their beards are real cotton and each holds a tool made of stiff mica glittered cardboard on a wooden toothpick handle. Bottle brush greenery with red lacquered berries decorate the bases. The hand molded, hand painted faces are quite expressive - note the open mouths with tiny white teeth. There may be a random broken pine cone tip here or there, otherwise excellent vintage condition.

Click for more detail...

12595

Cotton Batting Clay Face Santa Bottle Brush Star Christmas Ornament A 1920s - 1930s Japan made Christmas ornament featuring a clay face Santa Claus figure on a red bottle brush type star. The ornament is about 4 inches diameter. The Santa figure holds a green bottle brush tree and is just over 3 inches long. His suit is faded red cotton batting. His skinny legs and feet are black spun cotton. Santa wears a black paper ribbon belt, a real cotton beard, and a chenille trimmed hat. His face is clay or ceramic composition, hand molded and painted.

The brushy red star is wired and trimmed Visca. It sheds very little, the fiber strands are tight and secure. Santa's belly is a little flat, probably from storage, and his beard and lower suit area are darkened from age and soiling. A nice rare near-antique ornament in very good condition for its age and type.

The top of his cap forms a hook so you can hang him on the tree as an ornament. Hand painted face with bright green eyes, rosy cheeks, and open O shaped mouth, so cute! Marked Japan in red ink on the underside. There's a thin line of paint wear to the edge of his red hat above the forehead, otherwise excellent condition.

11711

Angel Cherub in Canoe Victorian Scrap Christmas Ornament Lovely antique 1800s Victorian Christmas ornament with a beautiful embossed German paper litho scrap angel or cherub in a canoe. The ornament is 4-1/2 inches long. The curly haired angel holds a draped flower swag and wears a yellow skirt with blue tied sash. The cardboard canoe backing is covered in textured brown crepe and outlined in skinny wired gold feather tinsel garland. The tinsel is loose at the center right edge but the old original glue still holds it in place elsewhere. The crepe finish has a little wear at the top and edges, nothing serious. The scrap angel is perfect with no tears or damage. There's a tiny hole at the top of the canoe for hanging.

12372

4 Cotton Batting Santas on Mica Airplane 1920s Christmas Ornament This wonderful antique Christmas ornament features not just one but FOUR molded composition or clay face Santa Claus figures riding a mica glittered fiberboard airplane. The Santas have faded red suits made of cotton batting, white cotton beard, and old cotton pipe cleaner chenille "fur" trim around their caps. The two Santas at the front have skinny legs of black spun cotton. The heavy, stiff cardboard airplane is 6-1/4 inches long by 5-1/4" wide across the wings , heavily encrusted in thick mica glitter.

The airplane ornament has a looped coiled German bullion wire at the center for hanging and is wrapped in fine gold feather tinsel. There are no labels or markings - this type of decoration was made in both Germany and Japan between the two World Wars, 1918 to mid 1930s - I suspect it was made in Japan. A smaller ornament like this with only one newer style Santa can be seen on page 148 of Robert Brenner's Christmas Revisited price guide book. There is typical, minor age wear to the cotton batting and fading of the red color, otherwise the ornament is very good condition with no tears or damage. Apologies for the terrible lighting in the photos.

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 12533: 4 Egg Art Christmas Ornaments With Shell Flower Decoration

Click for more detail...

12533

4 Egg Art Christmas Ornaments With Shell Flower Decoration Four beautifully decorated hand made Mid Century egg art flower theme Christmas ornaments, made from real eggshells and tiny dyed seashells. Two are diorama style, open at the fronts with shell flower arrangements inside, cradled in dried green moss. The ornament with the yellow flowers is open on both sides. They're lavishly trimmed with velvet ribbons, lacy gold foil Dresden scrap, metallic gold eyelash braid, strung tiny faux pearls, and tiny seashell roses at the tops or sides. I can only imagine the skill and time it took to create these delicate ornaments.

The other two egg ornaments have delicate sprays of shell flowers on the outside. One has two different flower decorations on the front and back, separated by Dresden gold scrap lace trim decorated with tiny white shell flowers. The bright pink egg has a bouquet of pink, white, and purple flowers on the front, the back is plain. The ornaments are about 2-1/2 inches high and in excellent condition with no cracks or damage other than perhaps chipped shell tip or two. All have gold cords for hanging. Too pretty to bring out only at Christmas, they'd also make ideal Easter decorations.

Click for more detail...

11981

Japan Composition Santa Diorama Scene Christmas Display At first I thought this beautiful composition diorama Christmas scene display was a candy container, but the seams are glued and there is no opening for candy. It's a wonderful tabletop display, with a half dome base and thick cardboard circular snowy sky painted back panel, 3 inches high by 4-3/4" long by 2-1/2" deep. The dimensional scene features a painted clay Santa Claus standing in front of a sponge moss tree with real twig trunk. Off to the side is a clay cityscape of tall buildings, one with a clock tower. Another sponge moss pine tree stands beside the buildings. The platform is thickly coated in white mica and clear glass glitter to sparkle like snow. The circular back panel is hand painted with snow falling from a dark blue sky onto a snowy forest of pine trees.

The scene is in very good condition. The silver foil panel across the front of the base has a little wear, and the snowy ground covering is no longer as white as it was when new. The underside is marked Japan. I'm unsure whether it dates to the pre-war period or post war, it could have been made anywhere from the 1930s to 1950s. I'm thinking it's probably older based on the nice quality.

Each has a ceramic clapper and a hanging loop at the top to use as an ornament, though they're not particularly Christmas themed. They are not marked but a sliver of a gold foil label remains inside one - they would have been made in Taiwan in the late 1970s to mid 1980s.Excellent condition with no damage.

5 Japan Pixie Elf Tinsel Spray Christmas Ornaments A set of five Mid Century Japan pixie elf Christmas ornaments with sprays of long gold metallic tinsel at their collars. When hung on the tree, the tinsel is supposed to drop down and form a skirt around the lower balls, but I put a rubber band around the collar of one for the photos to keep the strands from flying up into the pixie's face.

The vinyl pixie elf heads have green and red felt Santa type stocking caps. The ball bodies are 1-1/2 inches diameter, made of clay or plaster composition encrusted with thick gold glitter and metallic gold spangles. The ornaments are about 3-1/2 inches high. There are five identical pixie ornaments.

German Antique Woolly Stick Leg Sheep Christmas Putz Toy Figure This antique woolly sheep figure from Germany is often used in Christmas putz village scenes, though it was also marketed as a toy. It's just 2 inches high by 2-3/8 inches long, with a real wool covered clay or composition body and painted wooden stick legs. The sheep still has his lacquered paper ribbon collar with a tiny brass bell at the neck. He is quite clean considering his age. The face and leg paint are still in very good condition with no flaking or chips, though there is some very slight wear to the black paint of the hooves.
