7589-2

1920s Cotton Batting Santa Claus in Mica Sailboat Christmas Ornament This wonderful antique Christmas ornament features a molded composition or clay face Santa Claus figure riding in a mica glittered fiberboard or cardboard sail boat. The Santa figure has a faded red suit made of cotton batting, a white cotton beard, and old cotton pipe cleaner chenille "fur" trim around his cap.The heavy, stiff cardboard canoe is 3-3/4 inches high by 4" wide, heavily encrusted in thick mica glitter.

There are no labels or markings - this type of decoration was made in both Germany and Japan between the two World Wars. An ornament just like this can be seen on page 148 of Robert Brenner's Christmas Revisited price guide book. It doesn't state the country of origin but does date it to the mid 1920s. The boat is in good condition other than expected mica loss. The Santa figure has minor soiling to the red cotton batting.

11711

Angel Cherub in Canoe Victorian Scrap Christmas Ornament Lovely antique 1800s Victorian Christmas ornament with a beautiful embossed German paper litho scrap angel or cherub in a canoe. The ornament is 4-1/2 inches long. The curly haired angel holds a draped flower swag and wears a yellow skirt with blue tied sash. The cardboard canoe backing is covered in textured brown crepe and outlined in skinny wired gold feather tinsel garland. The tinsel is loose at the center right edge but the old original glue still holds it in place elsewhere. The crepe finish has a little wear at the top and edges, nothing serious. The scrap angel is perfect with no tears or damage. There's a tiny hole at the top of the canoe for hanging.

7681-2

Antique Cotton Batting Child on Sled Christmas Candy Container This charming old Christmas decoration is a candy container, or candy box as they were called in a 1919 Marshall Fields catalog. It's a cotton batting child lying prone on a cardboard sled, all lightly dusted in very fine clear glass glitter. The child has a hand painted composition clay face peeking out from the cotton hood, black spun cotton feet, and faded red chenille mittened hands. One side of the sled is decorated with red chenille poinsettia petals, green foil holly leaves, and a paper Merry Christmas label.

The candy container is in remarkably good condition for its near 100 year age. The front sled runner tips have slight bumping and the glitter coating is worn. The back of the sled is open - I'm not sure if there was a box insert inside to hold the candy or if it was made like that. There are no tears and the batting snowsuit still holds its shape and is quite clean with little if any discoloration. The underside is stamped Japan. About 4 inches long by 2 inches high.

The last photo shows part of a 1919 Marshall Fields wholesale catalog page showing a near identical candy box.

13087

Box Spun Cotton Christmas Putz Pine Cone Gnomes Dwarfs A complete set of six 1950s Japan Christmas putz elf, dwarf, or gnome figures with spun cotton and real pinecone bodies, still in their original Made In Japan cardboard box. The two gnomes with pale green flocked hats have hand painted molded clay faces, the other four have hard plastic faces. Each figure holds something: a bottle brush tree, spun cotton lantern, foil stocking, package. Average height is about 3 inches, the two clay faced gnomes are a little taller.

The larger gnomes have some missing pine cone tips as shown and one has a stain at the side of his hat from old glue discoloration. The gnome with the bright blue hat is missing the little chenille loop. The plain manila cardboard box has a label at one end as well as the words "Little Men" written on 2 of the lid flaps. My pictures are terrible due to poor lighting - their coloring is better in person.

2 Composition Clay Chickadee Clip On Christmas Ornaments A pair of composition clip-on bird Christmas or seasonal ornaments made of a plaster or clay-like material. The clips are solid brass and unmarked. I don't know when or where they were made but the birds are definitely vintage. 5 Japan Pixie Elf Tinsel Spray Christmas Ornaments A set of five Mid Century Japan pixie elf Christmas ornaments with sprays of long gold metallic tinsel at their collars. When hung on the tree, the tinsel is supposed to drop down and form a skirt around the lower balls, but I put a rubber band around the collar of one for the photos to keep the strands from flying up into the pixie's face.

The vinyl pixie elf heads have green and red felt Santa type stocking caps. The ball bodies are 1-1/2 inches diameter, made of clay or plaster composition encrusted with thick gold glitter and metallic gold spangles. The ornaments are about 3-1/2 inches high.
