"Emblem of the Order"
The Third Degree Emblem

The Emblem of the order dates from the Second Supreme meeting, May 12, 1883, when it was designed by James T. Mullen, who was then the first Supreme Knight. A quick glance at the emblem indicates a shield mounted upon the cross of Malta.

The Shield is that associated with a medieval Knight. The cross of Malta is the representation of a traditionally artistic design of the Cross of Christ through which all graces of redemption were procured for mankind. This then, represents the Catholic spirit of the Order. Mounted on the shield are three objects, a mace standing vertically, and, crossed behind it, an anchor and a dagger or short sword. The mace from Roman days is symbolic of authority, which must exist in any tightly bonded and efficiently operating organization. The anchor is the mariner's symbol for Columbus, patron of the Order, while the short sword or dagger was the weapon of the Knight when engaged upon an errand of mercy. Thus, the shield expresses Catholic Knighthood in organized merciful action and with the letters K of C, it proclaims this specific form of activity. The red, white and blue in the background are the colors of the flag of the country in which the order originated.

FAITH...HOPE...CHARITY

Red is the symbol of Faith, of belief in Christ, in the Redemption and in the mission of every man to spread the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ. White is the color of the Eucharistic Host, symbolizing God's presence among men and of the infinite love God has for man. White is then the symbol of Christ-like Charity. Blue is the color of Our Lady's mantle in which she draped her beloved Son, through Whom salvation came to a sinful world. Blue is then the symbol of Hope.

"Degree of Patriotism"
The Fourth Degree Emblem

The Knights of Columbus, an array of dedicated Catholic gentlemen, glory in the epithet: "The right arm of the Catholic Church." Sir Knights of the Fourth Degree deem it an honor and privilege to carry the triad emblem, which features the Dove, Cross, and Globe. Our honored Order cherishes its patron Christopher Columbus. Christopher "Christ bearer" Columbus. The Dove of Peace symbolizes the Paraciete. The Cross of Christ is the sign of our Christian faith; similarly, the Globe depicts the New World, the miraculous discovery of Columbus. Spiritually, the sacred symbols fashioned on our sword and lapel pin typify the union of the three divine Persons in one Godhead, the Most Holy Trinity.

The Globe - God the Father, Creator of the Universe
The Cross - God the Son, Redeemer of Mankind
The Dove - God the Holy Spirit, Sanctifier of Humanity
God willing, may we, Christian Soliders in the Columbian Crusade, lend loyalty to our honored Order, Patriotism to our beloved America, and Devotion the Holy Mother Church, all for the greater glory of God Almighty.

RARE KNIGHT'S TEMPLAR'S Revolutionary Style Hat w/ ORIG HATBOX This is perhaps one of my coolest acquistions in my career! I purchased it about 20 years ago on my first trip of antiquing thru West Virgina, near the Pennsylvania border in Morgentown. I found this in a little shop and have kept it ever since in displays, never before offering it for sale online til now!

This hat is a splendid Revolutionary style that reminds me of Napolean and the French Revolution. It is some sort of costume used in a ritual for a member of Templar's (not the Knights of Columbus as I had previously stated).

from the Wikipedia:
The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon (Latin: Pauperes commilitones Christi Templique Solomonici), commonly known as the Knights Templar or the Order of the Temple (French: Ordre du Temple or Templiers), were among the most famous of the Western Christian military orders.[3] The organization existed for approximately two centuries in the Middle Ages.

Officially endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church around 1129, the Order became a favored charity throughout Christendom, and grew rapidly in membership and power. Templar knights, in their distinctive white mantles with a red cross, were among the most skilled fighting units of the Crusades.[4] Non-combatant members of the Order managed a large economic infrastructure throughout Christendom, innovating financial techniques that were an early form of banking,[5][6] and building many fortifications across Europe and the Holy Land.

The Templars' existence was tied closely to the Crusades; when the Holy Land was lost, support for the Order faded. Rumors about the Templars' secret initiation ceremony created mistrust, and King Philip IV of France, deeply in debt to the Order, took advantage of the situation. In 1307, many of the Order's members in France were arrested, tortured into giving false confessions, and then burned at the stake.[7] Under pressure from King Philip, Pope Clement V disbanded the Order in 1312. The abrupt disappearance of a major part of the European infrastructure gave rise to speculation and legends, which have kept the "Templar" name alive into the modern day.

KNIGHT's of COLUMBUS INFO:
This fraternal organization was born when, on October 2nd, 1881, a small group of men met in the basement of St. Mary's Church on Hillhouse Avenue in New Haven, Connecticut. Called together by their parish priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, these men formed a fraternal society that would one day become the world's largest Catholic family fraternal service organization. They sought strength in solidarity, and security through unity of purpose and devotion to a holy cause: they vowed to be defenders of their country and their families and their Faith. These men were bound together by the ideal of Christopher Columbus, the discoverer of the Americas, the one whose hand brought the Holy Faith to this New World. They were Knights of Columbus.

This rare and wonderful keepsake looks to be as old as the organization itself...perhaps one of the earliest items devoted to their cause. It is made of black material taht looks to be beaver pelt or fur. it's not velvet or wool. Cascading across the top of this unusual piece are white and black feathers or plumes, and on one side is a red velvet cross surrounded by intricate wire work and hand sewn onto an oval black cloth medallion.

On the inside of the hat in silver lettering is the following:

THE M.C. LILLEY & CO.
(Then there is a shield and sword logo with the following:)
MANUFACTURERS OF
MILITARY
AND
SOCIETY GOODS
COLUMBUS, OHIO

Under that is the name of the man who must have been an early brother in this group. "PETER A. McHATTIE". Small man that he was, this hat is a tuny size 6 3/4.

Not only is this piece in incredible condtion given its age and authenticity, but it STILL HAS ITS ORIGINAL HATBOX!! Yep, that's right...though the outside of it is stained, tattered, and worn...this part wooden and part hard cardboard has amazingly stayed married to the hat it came with. It has a worn leather handle and a remnant of the original leather strap that once bound it shut. the inside is still fitted with a little platform to hold the hat in one place while traveling. The hat itself shows the most minimal wear on the edges and has been incredibly well perserved...I am no expert, but this looks like a museum piece to me! A modest reserve has been set at the price I paid for this many years ago, so feel free to email me direct with questions or to share information with me regarding this remarkable treasure!

This would be a PERFECT form from which to base a costume on...I wouldn't recommend wearing it due to the fact that it is so old, but a costumer would be thrilled to find such an awesome and authentic pattern!

VINTAGE 10K AVON DIAMOND HONOR SERVICE LAPEL PIN This is a great two piece service pin advertising Avon health and beauty products. Marked "10K", the larger of the pins is also stamped "Balfour" and on the front is a large "A" which is encrusted with seed pearls. It reads: "AVON HIGHEST HONOR". The two pins are attached by a delicate little chain, the larger one measuring about 5/8" in diamter, the smaller one about 3/8" in diameter.
