Spectacular 1997 Hong Kong Liberation Dollar This absolutely dazzling commorative silver dollar commemorates the return of Hong Kong from Britain to China. Unusual and exceptionally beautiful silk screen art work on the reverse. Obverse depicts a gladiator with chariot and a schooner in the background. Both sides have a greek keystone border. Victorian Gold Gilt Diamond Bar Pin This late Victorian Era Bar pin features a gold plated sterling setting with a gorgeous round brilliant diamond. The diamond measures approximately 1/8 carat or 0.12 points. It is near colorless and eye clean under 10x magnification (I2 clarity or better). The setting measures 2 1/3 inches and is hallmarked 750 (European mark for silver content). The pin is in excellent condition with a minor bend in the pin stem from use. Overall fabulous find.

Very Worn Large Cent This example of a Large Cent is so heavily worn that the date is not legible. From what details are visible, it appears that this coin is either a Coronet (1816-1839) or possibly a Braided Hair (1840-1857). But it appears from careful analysis that this particular coin only has 13 stars based on the spacing between the ones still visible up the left edge of the coin. There are five stars visible between the bottom of the bust and the tip of the coronet implying that a total of 13 would be correct for this coin. If that is the case, then this coin could only be a rare 1817 Coronet. Another feature that points to a Coronet is that on the reverse, the Words One Cent have obvious spacing between the words and the wreath. In the later Braided Hair Variety, the lettering is heavy and both the top right point of the letter E and the lower curve of the letter C are in contact with the wreath. However, the coronet should have a center dot, and this particular coin doesn't show the dot. Whether it wasn't there to begin with or is just worn from visibility, I can't tell. So, given the diagnostics, this coin is more likely a Coronet than a Braided Hair, but given the poor condition of the obverse of the coin, I can't be certain. And, even though this coin is in poor condition, it is so very rare in all grades so it remains a worthy collectible. Specs: WT: 10.89g; Composition: 100% copper; Diameter: 28mm; smooth edge. Note, 1817 was the only year of the 13 star variety of which this coin appears to be. I plan to try a pencil etching to see if more details can be revealed, and if so, I'll update this description accordingly.

1797 Pillar Dollar - Spanish Piece of Eight The Spanish Milled Dollar valued at 8 reales is also known as the Pillar Dollar or Piece of Eight and has been given a place in romatic fiction unequaled by any other coin. This time honored piece and its fractional parts of 1/2 and 1 reals and 2 and 4 reales were the principal coins of the American colonists and were the forerunners to our own silver dollar and its fractional coins of nickel, dime, quarter and half. This pillar dollar is dated 1797 and though heavily worn in some spots, it still clearly shows the M Mint mark for Mexico City. You will also notice the many chop marks present on the coin. The practice of adding chop marks or stamped insignia to coins can be dated to the 18th century. It delevoped among Oriental traders as a means of guaranteeing the silver content of coins paid out. Each firm had its own marking and often, after heavy circulation, the original design of the coins would become completely obliterated. The presence of these marks on this coin (see scan) indicates that this coin did circulate in the Far East. What a rich history! Specs: Diameter:39mm Content: 100% pure silver.
