Special Religious Christmas Eve Antique Advent Calendar Countdown! - Open Door Each Day to a Bible Quote w/ Holy Family & Angels This is an enchanting and beautiful antique Advent Calendar. It was designed to be a child’s companion during the Advent Season and add to pre-Christmas pleasure. A great feature of this calendar is that it is timeless because there is not a particular date written on it! The calendar is filled with wonderful scenes, featuring The Holy family in the manger, the 3 wise men, several young shepherds and children, several barn animals, and angels everywhere! The colors are bright and vibrant with sparkly glitter throughout! For each day in December, a little magical door opens as it counts down to Christmas Day. The door for Christmas Eve is the most special of all doors! Found inside each opened door is an inspirational Bible Quote and a small surprise picture! At the bottom of the calendar in very small print, it is stamped, "Printed in West Germany", "Haco 0106" (this may possibly be the publisher and original item number of calendar), along with the artist’s signature, "Lore Kimmel". It’s difficult to determine for sure the artist’s / illustrator’s signature. This calendar is in excellent original condition and the little doors have never even been used or open! This calendar comes in its original envelope. The envelope is signed by the gift giver, "To Carrie and Eli - Some Pre Christmas Enjoyment - Rena". It states on the envelope that this advent calendar is printed on luminous paper. For the most effective results, place the calendar so that light can shine through. I believe this calendar is not meant to be hung, but to be displayed on a table top, although I’m sure it can be pinned or tacked up on a wall. The original envelope that this calendar comes in is stamped, "Imported by Alfred Mainzer, Inc.; Long Island City, New York". Circa 1920’s.

1566

‘The Sermon on the Mount’ & Other Sayings of Jesus From King James Version of The Holy Bible, Antique Religious Paperback Book This is a wonderful, handy size antique religious paperback book that is filled with inspirational sayings of Jesus. The book is titled, "The Sermon on the Mount - and Other Sayings of Jesus From The King James Version of The Holy Bible" This book is decorated by Valenti Angelo and is designed, printed, and published by The Peter Pauper Press; Mount Vernon, New York. This book has a total of 61 pages. The book is in excellent condition, except that there is a small piece of the cover missing by the spine, at the bottom. The book is just a little delicate when flipping through the pages (as most old books are); However, every page is fully intact. This book has no stains, tears, browning, foxing, writing, doodling, or pen ink. This book does not have a printed copyright date, but I would estimate the circa to be 1940 - 1950’s.

*** I’ve included a short but interesting article in regards to UNDERSTANDING THE MEANING BEHIND "THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT":

In the Gospel of St. Matthew, the Sermon on the Mount is a compilation of Jesus' sayings, epitomizing his moral teaching. According to chapters 5-7, Jesus of Nazareth gave this sermon (estimated around AD 30) on a mountainside to his disciples and a large crowd. Matthew groups Jesus' teachings into five discourses, of which the Sermon on the Mount is the first. The others concern instructions for the disciples, parables of the Kingdom, instructions for the church, and a harsh denunciation of scribes and Pharisees.

The best-known written portions of the open-air sermon comprise the Beatitudes, found at the beginning of the section. The sermon also contains the Lord's Prayer and the injunctions to "resist not evil" (5:39) and "turn the other cheek", as well as a version of the Golden Rule. Other lines often quoted are the references to "salt of the earth", "light of the world" and "judge not, lest ye be judged."

Many Christians believe that the Sermon on the Mount is a form of commentary on the Ten Commandments. It portrays Christ as the true interpreter of the Mosaic Law. To many, the Sermon on the Mount contains the central tenets of Christian discipleship, and is considered as such by many religious and moral thinkers, such as Tolstoy, Gandhi, Dietrich Bonheoffer, and Martin Luther King, Jr. It has been one of the main sources of Christian pacifism.

1569

'Madonna Della Sedia' Italian Religious Antique Print, Madonna, Baby Jesus, & St John The Baptist / Famous Artist: Raphael Santi This is lovely antique print featuring Madonna embracing Baby Jesus while the young John the Baptist devoutly watches. This picture represents itself as a symbol of humanity with St. John the Baptist and renders homage to maternity with The Madonna. This picture is titled, "Madonna Della Sedia" by famous artist, Raphael (Raffaello Santi or Sanzio). This picture was originally painted by him in circa 1512 to c.1514. Someone once said, "When he died, the heavens wanted to give one of the signs they gave when Jesus Christ expired...Here, people are talking about nothing but the death of this exceptional man, who has completed his first life at the young age of 37. His second life - that of his fame, which is subject neither to time nor death - will endure for all eternity…". This print has beautiful details and colors throughout. The matting is very elaborate with beautiful embossed designs. The molded wood frame is fancy and retains a great original gold finish. Original glass and original backing with original label. The label reads, " R. 702; Madonna Del Sedia; By Raphael; C. & A. Richards; Boston, Mass.". This picture can be displayed one of two ways - hanging it on the wall with its original metal hanger or as a table top display with its original fold out stand. The fold out stand has a crease towards the bottom (probably from sitting on a table top for a long while) but it works just fine. Circa 1920’s.

***I’ve included a short article written about RAPHAEL SANTI (1483- 1520) & THIS PICTURE:

Raphael painted the picture in Rome, probably during the period immediately after the completion of the Stanza di Eliodoro. It soon passed into the Medicean collections. It was already there by 1589 and has been in the Pitti since the 18th century. It was carried off to Paris by the Napoleonic troops in 1799 and brought back to Florence in 1815.

A celebrated picture in which Raphael is under the influence of the antique and of the Venetian school, of Titian and of Sebastiano del Piombo. The form of a "tondo" is in itself a reminder of Florence and carries us back to the taste of the Quattrocento. Of the form of the tondo the artist preserves and emphasizes the curve with his genial adaptation of the figures to the outline of the painting. And yet the composition is in no way forced, but on the other hand the figures in following the curve become more closely entwined together. This grouping, this closing around the fulcrum of the tondo coincides with the centre of affection - the little Christ, the spiritual centre of the picture. The colour, in spite of its vividness, has a fusion and a warmth which Raphael attains with genial and personal mastery.

- This was cited from the following website: http://www.wga.hu/frames-e.html?/html/r/raphael/5roma/2/07sedia1.html

***Here is a little more info about this picture and the artist, Raphael:

The Madonna della seggiola or Madonna della sedia is a Madonna painting by the Italian renaissance artist Raphael. It depicts Mary embracing the child Christ, while the young John the Baptist devoutly watches. It is housed in the Palazzo Pitti collection in Florence.

Painted during his Roman period, this Madonna does not have the strict geometrical form and linear style of his earlier Florentine treatments of the same subject. Instead, the warmer colors seem to suggest the influence of Titian and Raphael's rival Sebastiano del Piombo.

Maria Montessori, Italian doctor and pioneer in pedagogy, wrote that it was her wish that the Madonna della seggiola hang in each Children's House (Montessori school) as a symbol of "humanity [St. John] rendering homage to maternity [Madonna]".

- This was cited from the following website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madonna_della_seggiola

***I’ve also included another short BIO ABOUT THE FAMOUS, RAPHAEL:

Italian master painter and architect of the Italian High Renaissance, Raphael is best known for his Madonna’s, such as Madonna della Sedia, and his large figure compositions now housed in the Vatican in Rome. His work is much admired for its clarity of form and ease of composition and for its visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur.

Raphael was already being described as a master in 1501. After moving to Rome in 1508, Raphael was commissioned by Julius II to paint some of the rooms of the palace in the Vatican. One of these paintings was The School of Athens. This was unheard of at the time for a inexperienced artists of only 25 years old. In 1514, Raphael was commissioned to rebuild St. Peter s, and although his work has since been demolished or altered, for a time he was the most important painter and architect in Rome.

Marked by perfection and grace, Raphael paintings and sculptures were highly admired by his contemporaries. When compared to the great Michelangelo or Titian, Raphael may be considered inferior, but he always triumphs when considering the ease and grace of his creations.

A Whimsical Antique Watercolor - Several Children w/ Baby Frolicking & Joining Hands in ‘The Circle of Life’ This is a delightful, inspirational, and very whimsical antique watercolor featuring several happy adorable children and a young baby frolicking in a field. The scene captures the children (3 girls, 3 boys, and a baby) all holding hands in a large circle, which to many people represents, ‘The Circle of Life", although it is not titled that. The beautiful colors in this picture are of soft muted pastels. The artist really captured the feeling and emotion of this scene, as the details throughout are nicely done. “The Madonna of the Pomegranate” Antique Print of Virgin Mary, Baby Jesus, & 6 Angels / Artist: Sandro Botticelli This is a beautiful crisp and detailed antique print of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus surrounded by 6 Angels. All of their faces are exquisitely detailed! The colors are bright and vivid. Both the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus have a halo and are bathed in a heavenly light from above. The artist of this picture is the famous, Sandro Botticelli and the actual title for this picture (although not written anywhere) is, "The Madonna of the Pomegranate". The molded wood frame retains the original gold finish with black and red trim color. It has a nice old patina. The picture and frame are both in excellent original condition with the original hanger and labels on the back. The top label reads, "Virgin and Six Angels By Botticelli". The middle label towards the bottom reads, "For Elizabeth + Buckstien". The bottom label reads, "From Aunt Nell". Circa 1920’s.

*** I’ve included below some VERY INTERESTING INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PICTURE, "THE MADONNA OF THE POMEGRANATE":

The Madonna of the Pomegranate is a painting by the Italian Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli, circa 1487. It is housed in the Uffizi Gallery of Florence, Italy.

The picture's title is explained by the pomegranate in Mary's hand: this could be understood as symbolizing Christ's Passion, the wealth of seeds conveying the fullness of Christ's suffering. It could also be understood as a symbol of heretical art and signify the fertility of Jesus. A comparison of this painting with Botticelli's earlier tondo, Madonna of the Magnificat, reveals that the artist has now arranged the angels symmetrically, thereby avoiding the compositional difficulties of the older depiction.

The Christ Child, whose hand is raised in blessing, is lying securely in the arms of Mary, but the sad, melancholy expression on the faces of mother and child are intended to remind the observer of the torments the Son of God will suffer in the future. The angels are venerating Mary with lilies and garlands of roses. The Rosary is a prayer that was created in its present form in the 15th century, and rapidly became widespread. The beginning of this prayer is embroidered on the left angel's stola: AVE MARIA GRAZIA PLENA ("Hail Mary, full of grace").

*** Here is a short little BIO ABOUT FAMOUS LISTED ARTIST, SANDRO BOTTICELLI:

Original name ALESSANDRO DI MARIANO FILIPEPI (b. 1445, Florence [Italy]--d. May 17, 1510, Florence), Florentine early Renaissance painter whose Birth of Venus (c. 1485) and Primavera (1477-78) are often said to epitomize for modern viewers the spirit of the Renaissance. His ecclesiastical commissions included work for all the major churches of Florence and for the Sistine Chapel in Rome. His name is derived from his elder brother Giovanni, a pawnbroker, who was called Il Botticello ("The Little Barrel").

Although he was one of the most individual painters of the Italian Renaissance, Sandro Botticelli remained little known for centuries after his death. Then his work was rediscovered late in the 19th century by a group of artists in England known as the Pre-Raphaelites.

Born Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi in Florence in 1445, Botticelli was apprenticed to a goldsmith. Later he was a pupil of the painter Fra Filippo Lippi. He spent all his life in Florence except for a visit to Rome in 1481-82. There he painted wall frescoes in the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican.

This picture has very nice details throughout with a very appealing depiction of Christ on Mount Olive. The print is in excellent original condition, except for a few very tiny scuffs. They don’t detract from the print and are barely noticeable. The original molded wood frame is very decorative. It retains the original ivory colored finish with original gold highlights. Original glass and replaced wire hanger. This is a large and substantial picture. Circa 1920’s.
