1912 Constitutional History, The Courts, Political Parties

We see many reprints and 'print on demand' books for sale these days ... but we believe it's difficult in most instances to do better than the original version! Pages are where they should be ... and the photos and other illustrations are always included in the books we sell. Some of our books are ex lib (withdrawn from a library), but unless otherwise noted in our descriptions, these have no library-related damage beyond the usual library markings and card pockets. This book is one of those originals! IT'S NOT A REPRINT!

An unusually nice copy of a scarce title, this is THE COURTS, THE CONSTITUTION AND PARTIES, a study in constitutional history and politics written by Andrew C. McLaughlin, University of Chicago. It was published in 1912 by the University of Chicago Press.

In this discussion of cardinal principles and facts in American constitutional history, McLaughlin features five articles: The first deals with the origin of the principle that courts can declare laws void. The second and third treat vital institutions that came into existence as popular government developed -– the significance of political parties and their relationship to popular government.

The fourth article discusses the changing theories of political philosophy, furnishing foundations for differing theories concerning the nature of the union. The fifth shows that American legal order took its rise in the theory of compact and of individual rights and in the belief that imperial order itself should rest on law.

The 299-page hardbound book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There are some very minor areas of wear to the edge/corners and spine ends. Inside pages have no apparent defects.

Government in Review, 1923

We see many reprints and 'print on demand' books for sale these days ... but we believe it's difficult in most instances to do better than the original version! Pages are where they should be ... and the photos and other illustrations are always included in the books we sell. Some of our books are ex lib (withdrawn from a library), but unless otherwise noted in our descriptions, these have no library-related damage beyond the usual library markings and card pockets. This book is one of those originals! IT'S NOT A REPRINT!

With this note printed on the title page, ‘Before publication every chapter of this book was read and approved by a Government authority,’ the J. B. Lippincott Co., Philadelphia, published in 1923 this revised, enlarged and illustrated edition of Frederic J. Haskin’s THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT.

Illustrated with photographs by Harris & Ewing, the 484-page hardbound book details the history, organization, functions, powers, responsibilities, and duties of the departments, offices, bureaus, and specialized branches of the United States Government and supporting services.

Among the photos included are both common and more unusual views: the Statue in Lincoln Memorial; East front of the Capitol; Front view of the White House; Aerial view of Washington; Amphitheater at Arlington; A thousand-year-old giant sequoia; Forest Ranger in camp; Room in the Patent Office; Armored dinosaur at Smithsonian Institution; Washington crypt underneath Capitol Rotunda; Treasury employees weighing coins; Making comparison of total light; World's finest precision testing machine; Bronze doors of the Rotunda of Capitol; ‘The Ghosts,’ Wheeler National Monument; New Hampshire Avenue, Washington, D. C.; State, War, and Navy Building; Armor plate punctured by 16-inch gun; How trapped miners keep out gases; Statue of Alexander Hamilton; Aztec Garden, Pan-American Building; Navy ZR-1, christened ‘Shenandoah’; Radio at Bolling Field; Surveying Mount Whitney; Scene in the Dead Letter Office . . . and many more!

It’s a fascinating book! And, it’s in Good+ condition, despite being ex lib with the usual library markings. There is some light damage to cover edges/corners and spine ends, but inside pages are clean and easy to read! Interesting information about our government in the early 1900s!

1885 Politics, Universal History, Fiske

We see many reprints and 'print on demand' books for sale these days ... but we believe it's difficult in most instances to do better than the original version! Pages are where they should be ... and the photos and other illustrations are always included in the books we sell. Some of our books are ex lib (withdrawn from a library), but unless otherwise noted in our descriptions, these have no library-related damage beyond the usual library markings and card pockets. This book is one of those originals! IT'S NOT A REPRINT!

This is John Fiske's AMERICAN POLITICAL IDEAS VIEWED FROM THE STANDPOINT OF UNIVERSAL HISTORY, a 158-page hardbound book based on three lectures delivered by Fiske at the Royal Institution of Great Britain in May, 1880. It was published in this apparent FIRST EDITION in 1885 by Harper & Brothers, New York.

This was the first book Fiske wrote tying the success of the U.S. to both limited self-government and Anglo-American stock, which he felt was the culmination of God's plan for cultural evolution. The author, philosopher, lecturer and Harvard librarian was an early follower of the evolutionary philosophy of Herbert Spencer.

These three lectures dealt with three American issues -- the Town Meeting, Federal Union, and Manifest Destiny. It's fascinating reading, even 120 years after it was first published!

Condition of the book is less than ideal, but still easily readable. It is ex lib with the usual library markings. Pages show some yellowing and are quite brittle. The first few pages are beginning to break loose from the binding, but none is completely detached. The text is complete and readable.

The covers show light edge/corner wear, but have been rebound professionally, so are generally quite good. There is one small tear at top of spine. Still, it's a title you won't find every day -- don't miss it! (3424)

Inequality & Progress, Right Wing Individualist Tradition

First published in 1897, INEQUALITY AND PROGRESS by George Harris (professor in Andover Theological Seminary) was reprinted in 1972 by Arno Press and The New York Times in their RIGHT WING INDIVIDUALIST TRADITION IN AMERICA series.

In his Preface, Harris notes that a century ago (the 1790s), many advocated universal equality -- meaning that all men should be equal in all respects. In his time, however, many advocate equalizing, but not in all areas. They regard inequality as the chief obstacle to welfare and advancement.

Progress, he says, is thought to consist chiefly in a nearer approach to political, economic, social and intellectual equality. Even when the difficulty of realizing it is recognized, the conviction remains strong that it is desirable and that effort should be directed towards gaining as much as is attainable.

Although he saw some truth in an idea so persistent, Harris says that discrimination is needed in the use of a term which is capable of widely different applications. 'I believe,' he says, 'that a service may be rendered by going back of various theories to certain fundamental facts of human nature and human development, and thus learning what may and what may not be taken for granted. Before social and political theories are constructed, primal truths concerning the constitution, inheritance and differentiation of men should be recognized.'

In the 164-page hardbound book’s chapters, then, he goes on to explain. Chapters are headed Existing and Expected Equality; Equality by Broad Comparisons; Types of Social Selection; Economic Equality A Chimera; Equality of Opportunity in Education… in Pursuits;A Fair Chance; Variety; Progress Produces Variety; Progress and Wants; Variety Produces Progress; Superiority; Aristocracy and Democracy; Resentment of Superiority; Resentment of Inferiority; Two Kinds of Discontent; Admiration and Inspiration; the Progression of Ideals; Uniqueness and Unity; and Christianity and Inequality.

Condition of the book is Very Good, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. The covers show no apparent defects, nor do inside pages. It’s a very nice book for anyone interested in historic conservative issues! (3694)

1863 Annals of Iowa, Volume One
This impressive looking 192-page hardbound book is titled The Annals of Iowa, Volume One - 1863 and is an offset reprint of the first historical quarterly published by The State Historical Society of Iowa, Iowa City. Featuring an historical introduction by longtime Iowa historian William J. Petersen, this was published by the Society in 1964 to commemorate the centennial of the first publication.

The volume includes an in-depth account of how the Society was founded, followed by some wonderfully detailed history of the state in the mid-1800s.

There are full-page portraits of Willard Barrows, who wrote a history of Scott County, Iowa; George Davenport, the first white person born in this region in 1817; and Antoine Le Claire, who worked extensively with the Native American populations in the part of the state.
Their memoirs are filled with detail and with wonderful information of their times, and the book includes a complete index to names, places, and events.

The book is obviously an important record of the state's past. It is in Very Good condition, although ex lib from a local library. A card pocket remains inside the front cover. Inside pages are clean and crisp There is residue from a price tag on the front endpaper. The dust jacket is present, in Good+ condition with some minor edge wear and some fading on the edges. It's a nice looking book, and if Iowa history is one of your interests, you'll want this on your shelf! (2282/rVrev813)
