Guatemalan textiles Background fabric is hand-woven on a blackstrap loom in the exact same way it has been done for thousands of years. The designs, patterns and colors are usually in traditional motifs. The applied embroidered designs are likewise done in traditional colors and patterns and are all done by hand stitching. The long shawls both narrow and wide would traditionally have been used by women. Wrapping around from shoulder to waist and then tied at the waist. It was used to carry a child on their backs. They are most often used here as table runners or wall hangings. Their exquisite colors and intricate patterns always make them the center of attention in any room! The pillows are very interesting in that they are usually made from the traditional Indian mantle (shoulder) cloth, what would look like a very short poncho, and is called a huipil. If you turn the pillow inside out you will see the center slit where you would put your head through, has been stitched together and embroidered over to match the mantle designs.
