Stove014

Rare Large Antique Stove Tile Woman This gorgeous round tile was made in the US around 1880-1890. Usually stove tiles are found in smaller sizes: this one measures a bit over 4 3/8" in diameter. Another unique feature is the thickness of this tile: 5/8". This depicts a woman's profile, facing left. She has a small flower in her hair. There's an interesting checkerboard pattern in the background. The glaze is a rich dark turquoise – also not common. Although not marked by the maker, this probably came from one of the tile factories of the time, such as Trent Tile Company or American Encaustic. There is minor edge roughness around both the inner and outer circles, and a chip off the back side. Although there is some wear to the majolica glaze, the tile still shows beautifully. (#Stove014)

T2042

Rare Los Angeles Pressed Brick Figural Tile Panel This gorgeous tile panel depicts putti (aka cherubs) playing musical instruments and dancing.
Done in a reddish brown glaze, they called this a vellum glaze. The cherubs are in low relief. The panel measures 9 3/4" x 5". The tile panel is set into an older solid wood frame that measures 12 3/4" x 8 1/2".

LA Pressed Brick tiles are rare and hard to come by. The company was in business from 1887 – 1926. The decorative tile production began in 1907. Fred H. Roberston was one of the main designers of their decorative tile. The tile has had a professional and invisible restoration. The tile is clearly marked on the back with not only the LAPB mark, but also with an impressed F.H.R. - for Fred H. Roberston. A great piece to add to your Arts & Crafts Movement tile or pottery collection. (#T-2042)

Vintage Whimsical Wheeling Tiles with Horses Great pair of vintage tiles depicting amusing scenes with horses and riders. These were hand painted on tile blanks from Wheeling Tile Company, in Wheeling, West Virginia. Oval tiles - each measuring 6 1/8" x 4 1/4". Painted in black and gray on a creamy white background, to resemble a cartoon illustration. One tile shows a man on a horse stuck halfway over a fence with the phrase "OK Now what" and the other shows a rider coming out of the Riding Academy, read to go, and his horse is cringing on the ground hiding from him. Both were painted by "Kitty" in the 1950's. Minor chip on bottom edge of one tile - generally both are in nice condition. (#1290)

X1007

Art Pottery Figural Fountain Spout This fabulous and unusual figural fountain spout is done in the design of head of a seal or sea lion. It's done in a rich dark brown to black glaze. The squared base of the spout measures 5 3/4" square and is between 3/4" - 7/8" thick. The relief is extraordinary – 4" high.

Although unmarked, this was most certainly made by a high quality Arts & Crafts Movement pottery / tile company. The clay was hand worked on the interior to help create the opening for the water. The work is good enough to have come from the Mueller Mosaic Tile Company.

There are quite a few glaze flakes on the seal and the base. That said – it is still a wonderful example of a whimsical spout. What a great addition to your garden! (X1007)

TMaj

Majolica Dog and Crow tile ca 1890 Whimsical and wonderful scene on this round majolica tile - a big dog lies in his dog house and stares at a crow. His bowl is right there - did the crow try to steal his food? Probably German in origin, the back of this has a raised circular edge, allowing the tile to function as a trivet. Fully glazed on all sides and edges, this has a background color of pale cream and molded design in brown, green, gold, black and gray. The back edge shows minor edge wear, two shallow flakes, and another wear line. The front surface is excellent, still with its original shiny glaze. (#T-1407)

Click for more detail...

2051

Claycraft Tiles Set of 8 Vintage Calif A & C This is a neat set of tiles made by Claycraft Potteries. They were a California Arts & Crafts Movement company, that primarily made tiles, and were in business in Los Angeles from 1921 – 1939.
Each tile measures roghly 5 3/4" square and is 3/4" thick. These were originally designed to be used in fireplaces, but could certainly be adapted for other projects. The design is a repeating 4 flower, vine and leaves. Some of the tiles are marked, and others are not. All are definitely Claycraft. These tiles all have some flaws, some minor and some a little more. A few have corner chips, most have some wear to high areas, two have large areas of chipping on the outside vertical areas. These are great if you want to do a restoration project, and outdoor area, a smaller table top. Some are in very decent condition – please do look through the photos. (#2051)
