A1AHa

Inoue AKITOYO (e. 20TH C) Shaku-kyo Actor; oban tata-e (framed & matted with visible area = 13¾" x 9¼"). Signed Akitoyo with Uchida (publisher) seal underneath. (Note: a companion piece indicating an actor from the same Noh play is also available for the same price [#A1AHb] - indicated by final pictures.) "Legend says that O-e Hiramoto (1148-1225), one of the famed Japanese warriors, was converted to Buddhism, became a priest, and went to China in order to practice the austerities. One day during his sojourn in China he met with the spirit of a lion who suddenly appeared in his presence from among blooming peonies and performed a beautiful dance when he started to cross a stone bridge. This legend represents each Buddhist believer's ecstatic world with birds singing and flowers smiling, and is dramatized in the Noh play entitled 'SHAKU-KYO' or 'Stone Bridge'." --From Publisher's note attached verso.

A1BB

Irving Amen (b. 1918; Boca Raton, FL) Gorgeous, large (23½" x 19") serigraph: "Gift of Love". Numbered ("253/275"), titled, signed and dated ("Amen '78") with pencil across the bottom margin; unframed and unmatted. An unusual and beautiful piece by a highly respected 20th century artist. Born in New York City, Amen began drawing at the young age of four. By the time he was fourteen years old, he won a scholarship to the Pratt Institute. He emulated Michelangelo's masterpieces and spent years perfecting his own unique style. He had his first exhibition in New York at the New School for Social Research and the at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington. He then studied in Paris where he had one-man shows in painting, woodcut and sculpture. Travels throughout Israel, Greece and Turkey in 1960 led to a retrospective at the Artists House in Jerusalem. A positive attitude, love of mankind, and religious backgroud emanate from his work.
