Condition: Used Publisher: State Historical Society of Iowa
This is the October 1940 issue of THE PALIMPSEST, monthly publication of the State Historical Society of Iowa, Iowa City.
This issue contains articles on: Phil Stong's Hawkeyes by Ruth A Gallaher. Critique of book she calls 'roughly speaking, one-fourth wrong, one-fourth dull, one-fourth offensive, and only one-fourth good. It might so easily have been a really great book.'
No Convention in 1840 by Jack T. Johnson. Constitutional convention and events leading from Territorial to Statehood status. Great details!
Crum and the Standard by James Fox. Rivalry between two Iowa newspaper editors in 1840s. Thomas Hughes in Bloomington and William Crum in Muscatine.
The Bloomington Herald by Edith May Bell. Story of beginning of the newspaper and its evolution through the 1800s. Many business and editors'/owners' names in this one.
This issue is in Very Good condition with no defects beyond very light edge wear on the soft covers, although it is ex lib and has a library stamp on the front cover. It's a great glimpse at some fascinating incidents in Iowa's history! (1367) |
