Circa: 1973 Condition: Used Size: 11 inches Type: PLATES Country of Origin: United States Manufacturer: WILTON ARMETALE
1973 Wilton Armetale Pewter Collectors Plate from Victorian artist Kate Greenaway Months of the Year Collection of 12 from that year. The Vintage February plate is that of a mother & girl daughter child ? picking flowers which is shown on a ceramic insert into the plate. The item is in good condition, just a few scratches on the shiny border & some crazing to the insert, made in Columbia Pa. RWP is their logo. Measures 11 inches diameter. Kate Greenaway (1846 -1901) /museum/kategreenaway.htm Kate grew up in suburban London, those areas where a few gardens and fields remained among the houses. She was a plain, shy, nervous child. Her father, an engraver and illustrator, sent Kate to art school to learn a profession. She attended a few 'life classes' and the grueling series of lessons for the National Course in Art Instruction. These classes were intended to create artisans and industrial designers, not artists.
Kate's steady popularity started with her publication of Christmas cards. Their originality and delicate style were immediately popular. Her subjects were usually young children, flowers, and quaint landscapes. Her children are dressed in Kate's versions of Georgian and Regency fashions ... dresses which were adapted by Liberty of London for actual children. Her light, sketchy style was uncommon at the time, with the traditional illustrators trying to get as much detail and 'verisimilitude' into their drawings as possible. Kate illustrated her own verses, adapted classics like Mother Goose, and illustrated books for other authors. Unknown how many others were made for Wilton in other series...
