Circa: Late 1800's Condition: Good+ Manufacturer: James Swan Seymour Conn. U.S.A.
This is a rare brace auger bit box with an inside label that shows two types of James Swan auger bits, "COOK'S PATENT" and "NO.7". The No.7 type was patented in U.S.A. on "DEC.25.1883" the label reads. The box appears to be made out of cherry hardwood, is solid, has good hinges and latch, nice finger jointed corners. It appears that it one had some sort of interest holders for auger bits, those are missing. We also note that on rear corner has a small chip of wood gone missing, and some nails added over the years. The label is burgundy color, with silver trim edge, and silver print, and is about 95% intact overall. The box measures 10.5 x 5.5 x 2.5", has a pretty nice exterior finish, looks nice. A rare advertisement box from the late 1800's era! |
