Circa: 1880's Condition: Good+ Manufacturer: Wheeler Madden and Clemson Middletown N.Y. U.S.A.
This is an interesting, rather rare antique hand saw with a steel plate reinforced handle! Most of these were designed and made by Wheeler Madden and Clemson, but since the etch on this saw blade is rather lite, I can not make out the maker's name. The larger letters on the blade etch are "ARACO" as best I can make out....The lettering in fancy characters. This is a good straight saw sharp teeth, with no missing teeth, 8 TPI, and the blade is 27.5" long. There is two small areas near the toe of the saw blade that have some fairly deep pitting, those are shown in the pictures....The saw us in useable condition with no rust on it now. The handle is very solid, and unusual shape with 4 brass saw handle screw/nuts that have and engraved circular design on each, and on both sides....The steel reinforcement plate is on one side only. The handle is in very nice shape overall, no cracks some minor dings and scratches, otherwise a nice finish. As mentioned, I believe this to be a Harvey Peace hand saw, but have not been able to confirm the etch name on the blade as one of Peace's products. |
