Our two couples started going to Antique shows in the early 80’s. Everyone
had something they collected except for me. I figured that I would be going
to a lot of these shows, so I had better find something of my own. I didn’t
want to overlap with their collections, so it had to be unique. I don’t
remember how I decided to collect what I did, maybe they just caught my
eye, but I decided to start collecting mesh purses. At the time, women
did not want anything to do with ‘girly’ things. This was the height of the
women’s movement. I was amazed at the combination of artistic appeal
and the mechanics of manufacturing these beautiful items. As my collection
grew, my wife started encouraging me and made sure that I only purchased
purses that were of the best quality. Over time my collection grew to almost
100 purses. I purchased a display case from a jewelry store that was going
out of business. Now, on a Friday evening, after a long weeks work, we can
go out into the garage and over a nice glass of wine look at a collection that
is a joy to see. We all agree that I have been wise in purse selection and
the collection should continue to appreciate in value. When starting a
collection, do not be afraid to cross the gender line! Your only concern
should be to buy things that you enjoy collecting and looking at.
