My daughter, who is 18 and just recently moved out on her own, started
her collecting and antique treasure hunting when she was about 7 years
old. Her dad had told her about how he had dreamed of getting a Davy
Crockett watch when he was a child. After much pleading, his parents
gave him the watch for his birthday. He was so excited that he got up
in the middle of the night to check the time and dropped the watch.
Both his heart and the watch were broken. She decided to make it her
mission to find a working Davy Crockett watch for Dad. Everywhere we
visited, she wanted to go through all the antique and collector shops.
In the process of looking for the watch, she found lots of little
treasures. She started collecting crystals and square nails. She then
moved on to sake and tea sets. Many of the shop owners were delighted
with her as she gave them her phone number to contact her if they ever
ran into any Davy Crockett watches. They often gave her free gifts of
little antique treasures to add to her collection. By the time she was
11 years old, she had discovered the Internet and found a working
original Davy Crockett watch in mint condition. She bid and won the
auction and presented it to her dad 50 years after he had broken his
original watch. They were both in tears when he received his gift. I
think some of her tears were because the quest was over. She had great
fun in looking in antique shops throughout our travels. Since then, she
has found some beautiful antique powder compacts. DR in Atascadero, CA
