General Joe Wheeler Cigar Tin Trunk

This is a General Joe Wheeler Cigar Tin Trunk by Elmer E. Kirkland of New York. Fightin' Joe, as the General was known, was born in 1836 and died in 1906. According to an internet search, he has the rare distinction of serving as General in wartime for 2 opposing forces. He was a noted Cavalry General in the 1860's during the American Civil War and served later as a General in both the Spanish-American and Philippine-American War. He also served as a United States Representative from the state of Alabama. This is a nice cigar tin trunk with a paper label insert on the inside with General Joe Wheeler's tribute. Under his picture it reads: General Joe Wheeler in Blue. The lower right corner reads: American Lithographic Co., NY. The lower left corner reads: Trademark Re Rec by E.E. Kirkland Co. The is because of damage over this area and the rest of the word is not readable. In the upper left area in a circle label which appears to be placed over the General's label it reads: Not made by a Trust. The label is not mint, there are what looks like maybe some minor pencil scratches and a few areas of wear, but in general, a very nice piece of old advertising. The tin trunk itself also has wear, which I believe shows in the photos for the most part. It is not mint, but not bad condition considering its age. On one end is the lettering for Elmer E. Kirkland Co., Binghamton, NY. On the other end are several labels made to look like a trunk that has traveled. This piece measures approximately 6.5 x 5 x 3 inches. The hinge is present which fits over a small piece upon which a small lock could be used to protect the cigars

American Belleek Willets Mfg. Loving Cup circa 1900

This is a Loving Cup which was a wedding gift in 1900 to Cornelia Ravold and George Casey, This was purchased from the living estate of James Davis. Family history from Frances Davis, wife of James Davis as follows: James Davis is the grandson of George Casey and Cornelia Ravold. They had 3 daughters and James is the child of one of the daughters. Cornelia Ravold had parents from France. They had to speak French at many family events. George didn t know French, but had to learn it. Cornelia s father was a surgeon in the Civil War. He came to the US from France in about the 1920s. His name was Dr. Jacque Ravold, who married Louisa Waits. They were from the St. Louis, MO, area. Louisa was the daughter of William S. Waits. George Casey s father was Samuel Casey from Kentucky, who was a US Representative Congress during the Civil War, and he was instrumental in keeping Kentucky on the Union Side. Family history also goes back to the Newhall s and the Shiefs spelling . This family was significant in the 1700s in the China Trade and were involved in shipping. The cup measures approximately 7.5 inches tall. It is in mint condition. It is beautifully decorated with gold gilding. This is a very fine porcelain. The Willets Mfg. mark is the brown snake. I am showing a front and back black and white photo that Francis Davis supplied me with which is the table of wedding gifts received for Cornelia and George.

Snuff Box circa 1832 Belonged to Wm. S. Wait

This is a fantastic piece of history This little snuff box has the words: Life of an Actor - A Peep at the Manager, written on the lower center area of the top. The graphics are absolutely wonderful Inside is a small piece of paper that reads: Wm S Wait Snuff Box Used sometime when he was a boy. There are actually old pieces of snuff in this box A bit of research history I found online was that Horatio Lloyd wrote an autobiography on the Life of An Actor. It speaks to the play, The Climbing Boy in 1832 in London at the Olympic Theatre and the Jack Rag Snuff Box that was fashionable at the time. This piece was purchased at the living estate sale of James Davis of Des Moines, Iowa, who is a decsendant of the family mentioned in the next paragraph. According to Mr. Mrs. Davis, this was passed down to Mr. Davis from Dr. Jacques Ravold, M.D., of St. Louis, MO. This information was found online at the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Volume 35. Mrs. Cornelia Ravold Casey. DAR ID Number: 34753 Born in Greenville, Ill. Wife of George F. Casey. Descendant of Col. Ezra Newhall, of Massachusetts. Daughter of Jacques Ravold and Louisa Wait, his wife. Granddaughter of William S. Wait and Sarah Newhall, his wife. Gr.-granddaughter of Thomas Newhall and Mahitable Cheever, his wife. Gr.-gr.-granddaughter of Ezra Newhall and Sarah Fuller, 1737-77 , his first wife. Ezra Newhall, 1733-98 , was captain of Continental infantry 1776; major 1777; promoted lieutenant colonel and was brevet colonel at the close of the war. He was born in Malden; died in Salem. This snuff box is approximately 3.5 inches in diameter and approximately 5 8 inch thick.

Hitchcock Chair - Belonged to Dr. W. Likely SImpson

In 1826 Lambert Hitchcock built his factory next to the Farmington River in what is today, Riverton, Connecticut. In 1829, his brother-in-law, Aba Alford 1807-1881 joined him as a partner. Between 1832 and 1843, all chairs were signed quot;HITCHCOCK, ALFORD CO HITCHCOCKSVILLE, CONN WARRANTED quot;. This particular chair was purchased from the Everett Lee Davenport estate 12-1-15 to 3-21-05 in Diagonal, Iowa, in August 2005. What we learned from the family follows: Lee s wife they evidently called him Lee instead of Everett had a brother named W. Likely Simpson, who was a doctor of ENT. Mr. Simpson brought this chair back to Iowa from Memphis, Tennessee, sometime in the 1955 time frame. According to what else we found from internet research, Dr. Simpson, was born 7-15-1878 and passed on 3-10-1976. He was Chairman in 1937 at the College of Medicine in Memphis, Tennessee. He graduated from the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary in 1905. The University of Vienna at Oxford, England, was where he obtained his degree in Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology. According to the research which was obtained from the University of Tennessee at Memphis, Dr. Simpson had quot;unequaled talents in paranasal sinus and temporal bone surgery quot;. Dr. Simpson retired as Chairman in 1950, and was described as a quot;dedicated teacher and trained 10 residents quot;. This chair indeed does have the afore mentioned markings. There are no damages to the wood. You can see where the lower back area wore down the stenciling from someone sitting. The seat does have a few loose strands, but for a piece that has this type of age, I would expect that. There is evidence of a foot on the lower rung. We did not find out from the family just how Dr. Simpson acquired the chair, but the assumption is that it was passed on to him.

Mola with Bird Motif

This is a vintage Mola with a beautiful bird motif. This came from the estate of a gentleman by the name of Everett Lee Davenport and it belonged to his brother, Randall R. Davenport. They were from the Diagonal, Iowa area. Randall lived from 1943-1977 and passed in Los Angeles, California. He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a diesel mechanic from 1968-1976. He most likely acquired this in that time frame, while working on the Railway. The piece has lovely color for its age. There are blue, green, red and oranges mostly on a black background, with a beautiful bird motif. I purchased this piece as you see it, already framed, and I am making the assumption that it was done for preservation. There is a note on the back which reads: Cloth from South America Framed by Randall Davenport. The mola measures approximately 15 by 20 inches and the frame measures approximately 19 by 25 inches.

Easel Monument of George W. Kelley

This is an easel monument presented by Sergeant George W. Kelley to his family with his record of service. He enlisted from Story County, Iowa in 1861 and mustered into service at Iowa City as a private of Company A, 10th Regiment Iowa Infantry Volunteers. It goes on to give his service record which I have paraphrased - if you need all the details, please let me know as serving under Captain W. McGallo and Colonel Perczell with the Regiment assigned to Boomer's Bridgade, MM Crocker's Division, 17th Corps, Army of Tennessee which participated in the expedition beginning with Bird's Point in January 1862 to Chattanooga, Tennessee on November 23, 1863. He was confined to a hospital at Corinth, Mississippi in 1862 and again at Camp Dennison, Ohio in 1862. He was wounded by gunshot at Champion Hills, Mississippi on May 16, 1863. He was detailed for special duty at General Boomer's Headquarters from 1862-1864 and received an honorable discharge. This is in its original oak frame which measures approximately 26.5 inches by 34.5 inches. The opening for the monument measures approximately 22 inches by 30 inches. The condition is very good. There is slight water damage to the bottom edge of the monument, not the frame, and there are 3 minute hole-type-tears which are visible near the bottom center, otherwise, a slight bit of foxing is present. The overall appearance is a beautiful piece of work, and a proud soldier indeed This is really ready to hang, should you choose to do so.

Chinese Silk Lady's Hat circa 1930s

This is a circa 1930-1935 era Chinese silk lady's hat which has been framed. I purchased this at the estate auction of J.C. Shorty Schilletter, who I'm told was a professor at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. You see this beautiful piece the way I purchased it, already framed. I'm making the assumption that the Professor had this framed for preservation purposes, as it is in really nice shape for its age. The only damages that I can see, as I have not removed the backing to check further, is along the top scalloped edge which is trimmed in a lilac silk binding. There are damages mostly in the V area of the scallop to the right and another to the left side about half way down the left, all on the binding. The approximate measurements are 17 inches at the bottom in the widest area by 9 inches at the top in the scallop area by 10.5 from top to bottom. The frame measures 20.25 x 14.75 x 1.5. The label on the back states that it was framed at Carlson of 111 E. Front Street, Wheaton, Illinois, in business since 1915. The embroidery work is detailed and very professionally done.
