BEHIND THE SCENES, THIRTY YEARS A SLAVE

AND FOUR YEARS IN THE WHITE HOUSE By Elizabeth Keckley. Edited by Frances Smith Foster. University of Illinois Press, Urbana Chicago. 270 pages, index, illustrated. Born into slavery, Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley rose to a position of respect as a talented dressmaker and designer to the political elite of Washington, D.C., and a confidante of First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln. Keckly offers a rare, behind the scenes view of the Lincolns. Her description of the Lincoln's at home reveal touching, unguarded moments of laughter, discussion, and affection. She witnessed the grief of both parents at the death of their beloved son, Willie, and Mary Todd's prostration after the president's assassination. A compelling story worthy of a place in any Lincoln collection. Mint condition.

MARY TODD LINCOLN, HER LIFE AND LETTERS

Justin G. Turner Linda Levitt Turner. Introduction by Fawn M. Brodie. Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., New York, 1972. Hard cover, dust jacket. 750 pages, index, illustrations. From her exuberant girlhood, through the White House years, to the bleak wanderings of her widowhood, here, for the first time, is the authentic voice of one of the most misunderstood figures in our history- Abraham Lincoln's wife. All 609 of her available letters, of which more than half have never before been published, are now brought together. They span 42 years, they are not only addressed to her husband, children, and friends, but also to such historical figures as Edwin M. Stanton, Charles Sumner, General U.S. Grant, and Queen Victoria. They have been interwoven with an authoritative, intensely human biographical narrative in a book that shatters the distorted image, indeed caricature, that is the Mary Todd Lincoln of popular myth. Excellent.

In his Gettysburg report in the Official Records, Rickett's writes, quot;the cannoneers fought them hand to hand with handspikes, rammers, and pistols, and succeeded in checking them for a moment, when a part of the 2nd Corps charged in and drove them back. During the charge I expended every round of canister in the battery, and then fired case shot without the fuses. The enemy suffered severely. quot; His report goes on to state that he lost 6 killed, 14 wounded, 3 missing, 20 horses killed and 1,200 rounds of ammunition spent.
