1976 #1 Festival of Lights - Holiday Series of 10 Celebrating Jewish Hanukkah/Ted DeGrazia - distributed by Artists of the World & Fairmont/Bradford #84-F4-1. Only 10,000 made. Mint in good box w/papers. I have the rest of the series. Buy more & save. Teodoro or Ettore 'Ted' DeGrazia was born in Italy, June 14, 1909 & died Sept. 17, 1982. He was touched by the plight of the American Indian. He befriended and lived among the Indians of Arizona and New Mexico. He was particularly inspired by the innocent children he met. As his fame grew and his unique art started to become highly collectible, he gave some of his paintings to friends and some to organizations to sell and raise funds for their different causes. Much to his frustration, the taxes levied on his gifts made it impossible for the poor to accept them. There is an unconfirmed rumor that he hid a horde of his paintings somewhere in the Superstition Mountains. It is known that he lit a huge bonfire, fueled by his paintings, in protest of the tax system. Much of his work depicts Indian children at work and play. Although his art seems simplistic, the grace and movement created by his stylized, almost impressionistic use of color has been difficult to duplicate by his many imitators. Collectors are obliged to use their imagination to see what the subjects in a DeGrazia portrait might be feeling, as most have little or no facial detail. DeGrazia still holds a place in the heart of Native American art lovers many years after his death. 'Artists of the World' have been producing DeGrazia collector plates since the early 1970's. 'Los Ninos', depicting children dancing in a circle was selected by UNICEF for their annual Christmas card years ago and was the subject of his first collector plate. His art was the inspiration for a collection of figurines produced by the prestigious Goebel Company(see elsewhere on the website). Various plates, prints, lithographs, figures & other items are still readily available. If we can help with a specific piece, please let us know. We have numerous items not yet listed, as well as several sources for whatever you crave. Most of the rest in this series available on this site or we'll find them for you if you just ask. Blessed HOLIDAYS to you & yours, & God Bless America. |
