Circa: 1898 Manufacturer: New York Monthly Company, New York
Original book page which appears to have photos on each side, from "The Battle with Spain", published by New York Monthly Company, New York in 1898. Not a reproduction, but page from an antique 1898 issue of this book (we guarantee this), with antique photos or prints on each side of the page. On one side there are two photos taken on the Second-Class Battleship Maine (USS Maine, U.S.S. Maine; (please note that there are other photos from the USS Maine in items #1009, 1010, 1011 and 1207). On the other side is a photo of "Target Practice with Heavy Ordnance" which appears not to have been taken on the Maine. As described in the paragraph under this picture, this photo shows "gunners handling a 6-inch rapid-fire breech-loading rifle, which is placed in a barbette on the gun deck of one of our protected cruisers".
For the photos shot on the Maine, the top one is labelled "A Minstrel Show on the 'Maine'". This photo shows people in costume "giving a minstrel entertainment", and you can see that at least two of the people are in "blackface" (black face) or have blackened their faces with makeup. The photo beneath this shows the "Ship's Company of the 'Maine'", showing "a large number of the petty officers and sailors" of the ship "while she was lying at the Brooklyn Navy Yard".
The book covers of the original book were in very bad shape, so we removed the good pages and are selling them separately. That is why, while there are no dates on these pages themselves, we can guarantee the age. Overall, this book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine!").
Excellent condition black & white photographs or pictures, on full page measuring about 13 inches x 10 3/4 inches. No major tears, bending, or yellowing. There is very minor page edge wear (corner bending, other edge handling wear, all very minor), some stray dots and expected overall handling wear for a book page (no large creases, but the little within-the-page handling bumps or creases that you see from a page being handled or turned within a book). There is also the expected uneven edge where the page was taken from the book, and slight browning at the edges of the pages from age. We would consider all of this minor, and we judge that most or all of this would not be noticeable framed.
A terrific piece to add to a collection related to the Spanish American War, the 1898 War, the U.S.S. Maine, or a collection relating in general to the U.S. Navy or US Navy Vessels, Ships, Battleships, Warships, etc. May also be of interest to those collecting pieces relating to Black Americana and minstrel shows, or those interested in war guns, navy guns and rifles, ship guns and artillery, etc.
