Two Plays - the Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel and Sticks and Bones
The first two plays in a Viet Nam trilogy. Rabe's dynamic sense of stage mixes the comic grossness of barracks life with the horrific overlapping battle scenes in Pavlo Hummel; and, in Sticks and Bones, plays blind veteran David Nelson's stored-up venom off against the soap-operatic banalities of his typical american family, Ozzie, Harriet, and Rick.
There are many black and white photos of scenes from the plays. The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel was firt produced by Joseph Papp, May 20, 1971, at the New York Shakespeare Festival Public Theater, under the direction of Jeff Bleckner. Sticks and Bones was first produced on Broadway by Joseph Papp, on March 1, 1972, at the John golden Theatre, under the direction of Jeff Bleckner.
