Circa: 1971 Condition: Very Good Type: Hardbound Publisher: National Geographic Society Author: William Graves Pages: 204 ISBN: 0870440861
Another title in the long line of wonderfully informative and illustrated books from the National Geographic Society, this 204-page hardbound copy of HAWAII was the society’s first special publication of the 1970-71 series. It features 200 color illustrations of the 50th state, and is supplemented with a large National Geographic map of the islands.
Written by William Graves of the Geographic’s senior editorial staff, locations highlighted include the 13,796-foot peak of Mauna Kea; the submerged formations of ‘pillow lava’ that are Hawaii's volcanic foundations; pineapple fields on Lanai; an orchid farm on Hawaii; wild pig hunting on Maui; exotic tropical fish in the waters off Makaha Beach; surfers on Oahu; engineers irrigating Molokai; and a Navy practice bombardment of desolate Kahoolawe.
History of the development of the islands is discussed, as are early settlers who built a society that endured undisturbed until 1778, when the great English explorer and navigator Capt. James Cook sighted the green, still heights of the Island of Oahu. News of his discovery spread, ultimately attracting traders and whalers, missionaries and merchants, and opening the latest chapter of Hawaii's history. Today's visitors, notes Graves, discover beaches stretching beneath swaying palms, the glitter of sun on waves, the steamy fragrance of a luau.
The book is a celebration of the state, with fabulous views of the important features. It’s in Very Good condition, with no apparent defects inside or out. The dust jacket is present and shows some minor edge/corner wear. The loose Geographic map is present and doesn’t appear to have been opened. (6101/11rev)
