Roscoe Conkling, of New York, was among the country’s most powerful politicians after the Civil War. He was a Congressman from 1859-1863 and again from 1865—1867. He was also a U.S. Senator from 1867—81.

This cabinet photo was given out as a promotional tool, ostensibly for the Baking Powder Company. It is also likely that, because Conkling controlled the Republican political machine in New York, it was patronage to Conkling.

Front reads: Roscoe Conkling.
Chapman, Smith & Co, Chicago. (in pencil say "Senator")

Back reads: "Presented to Every Purchaser of Chapman, Smith & Co’s Western (The Superb) Baking Powder."

Size: 4 1/4" x 6 1/2"

Condition: Excellent. Minimal wear. Looks like it spent its life protected in an album. You can see the small penciled "Senator" on the front. On the back is penciled "Legislature 1858-66, Senator 1867-1879." This would date the photo prior to the end of his career. C.1879-80.
