This is a beautiful old commemorative pearlware plate produced by Royal Doulton for the Hudson-Fulton Celebration in 1909.
This was a huge event at the time. From Saturday, September 25, to Monday, October 11, 1909, the State of New York commemorated the 300th anniversary of the discovery of the Hudson River by Henry Hudson in 1609 and the 100th anniversary of the first successful application of steam to navigation upon that River by Robert Fulton in 1807.
Of particular interest is the airplane in the center area of the plate. It represents the flights made during the event by Wilbur Wright, one of the famous Wright brothers. On October 4, 1909, Wilbur made a 20-mile flight up the Hudson River from Governors Island to Grant’s Tomb and back in 33 minutes. He lashed a canoe to the bottom of his airplane, the Wright Flyer III, in case of an emergency landing in the water. More than one million New Yorkers witnessed the flight.
The center of the design shows a wonderful view of the celebration and highlights the latest methods of transportation including the airplane and airships.
Condition: Excellent condition. No chips or cracks. Good strong color. There is some crazing which is fairly common on plates of this type.
Size: 10 1/2"
Imprint on back: The "Areo" Plate Hudson-Fulton Celebration September & October 1909 Higgins & Seiter New York
This is quite a piece.
