This is a wooden mortar and pestle datineing from the early 19th century or possibly late 18th. It is 8.5 inches tall. The motar is nicely turned with a distinct foot and no less than 9 grooved bands. The pestle is alse well turned. There are also numerous small cracks from the shrinking wood as it has dried out over the centuries. They add to the character of the piece.

Most every household in early America had a similar mortar and pestle in their kitchen to grind spices and cooking other ingredients. Such pieces also found medical and healing use.
