From my own collection for over 25 years, this is a real fur muff dating to the early 1900s. About a century old, the muff is about 14' by 12" and has a fur front and a rust colored satin back. It has openings on each end to put your hands and arms inside for warmth, and it also has a zippered compartment which acts as a little purse.
I am unsure what kind of fur this is. It has a spotted leopard pattern and is long soft real fur. It could be mink or even rabbit that has been dyed. I am not an expert on what furs were generally used back then.
In good vintage condition, it has become slightly separated at the top; a few stitches at the top will easily remedy this. Also, the little cord has become detached; no biggie, it's fine without it actually.
Overall, this is a very nice and authentic antique fur muff in well preserved condition. While I am very much opposed to killing animals for furs, I will not destroy this. I bought it when I was in my late teens and it truly is lovely and should be enjoyed still today.
Perhaps if only vintage furs were sold and worn, no animals would have to be killed for their fur today!!
