Circa: 1900 Condition: Used
Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse and Capt H Engelbart Postcard. This Norddeutscher Lloyd ocean liner was the first passenger/warship to be sunk in World War I in August 1914. Built in 1897, it was an award winning ship for speed as well. Also the first to have a Marconi wireless system on board. The captain pictured on the postcard, Capt. H. Engelbart, was recognized for saving the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse in 1900 during a dock fire. Bremen was the ship's route. Postcard is used with a German cancel and a football style cancel over the German stamp. There is some surface wear, but overall condition is very good. Believed to be a very rare postcard. |
