LOVELY QUAINT FAMILY SCENE OF A MOTHER SITTING OUTDOORS IN THE ROSE GARDEN IN A WOODEN CHAIR. SHE IS HOLDING ON TO HER YOUNG TODDLER BABY GIRL, WHICH SHE HAS A TREAT IN HER HAND TO GIVE TO HER EAGER PET PUPPY DOGS. A NICE TERRIER BEGGING AND A JACK RUSSELL TERRIER. VIBRANT, VIVID, UNFADED LITHOGRAPH. EXCELLENT CONDITION OF THE ILLUSTRATION. At the bottom where the calendar is has some edge wear, creases and some foxing.

Who Speaks First?

A distinctly different Elsley, from the ususal work by the famous Englishman, is this out-of-door picture with its brilliant sunlit coloring and its background of the foliage and flowers of Junetime in an old English garden. In the foreground, in her simple muslin dress, sits the charming mother with the typical Elsley child upon her knees - a healthy, sunny child who wins you at a glance. As for the terriers, the rough-coated Scotchman (if we may use the expression) and his sleek English cousin are evidently aristocrats of their respective breeds and the whole composition has the patrician atmosphere never absent from Elsley's pictures. He paints the intimate home life of the well-to-do English family and the unfailing beauty of his compositions are a high tribute to his artistic taste, as well as skill.
Arthur J. Elsley is probably the best-known of contiemporary English artists. He began his artistic career at the South Kensington School of Art when he was only fourteen years old. He probably holds the record as being the youngest exhibitor of a picture admitted to the Royal Academy, as his first canvas appeared there when he was only sixteen years of age.
