VAN BRIGGLE Hopi Maiden Pottery Colorado Springs 6 3/4 inches wide longways and 6 1/2 inches tall excellent condition no chips cracks MARKED VAN BRIGGLE COLO SPGS COLO M R (Marla Ridenour-Cole, who worked in the 90's, also the glazers mark of the Roman numeral V Helen Johnson daughter of Fred Wills) DOUBLE A FOR ANNA VAN BRIGGLE DOUBLE A on the back near her feet. Van Briggle pottery was started by Artus Van Briggle in Colorado Springs Colorado after 1901. Van Briggle had been a decorator at Rookwood Pottery of Cincinnati Ohio. He died in 1904 and his wife took over managing the pottery. The wares usually had modeled relief decorations and a soft matt glaze. The factory has sadly closed. |
