Gives the full details of the court martial of Captain John R. Cutler, 33rd New York Volunteers, before a General Court Martial, of which Brigadier General J.M. Brannan, U.S. Volunteers, was President, that convened at the camp of General Smith's Division.
Captain Cutler was charged with the following:
Signing a false muster roll in which six of the men therein enumerated as present had previously deserted.
Signing a false return relating to the desertions, discharges and deaths of members in his company.
Procuring James Hilbreth, of his company, to impersonate a deserter and draw the pay of the deserter which was then used by Captain Cutler for his personal use.
Purchased boots, gloves, and various other articles, at exorbitant prices, for his own private personal benefit.
Took from a private house two blankets and one lady's plaid cloak.
