This is one of the ultimate 'I LOVE to cook' books!
There is a wide variety of classical and international recipes that glorify the art of cooking. Each recipe includes brief notes about the country of origin and the context the food was eaten in.
For example, the 'Dundee Wedding Cake' (with 12 eggs, currants, almonds, etc) includes a brief history of this tradition starting from the Middle Ages in England.
This is very liberally illustrated with reproductions of old prints, tapestries, illustrations, paintings and sketches. Most are in full color.
Volume I features ten chapters: First the Apple. When Eating Became Dining. Medieval Feast and Famine. Renaissance Of the Table. In Quest Of Spices. From the Good Earth. The Triumph of French Taste. The Other Europe. Pleasures Of English Company. and Toward An International Style.
Volume two contents: A Word Of Explanation, Menus: Appetizers, Soups, Fish, Poultry, Meats, Rice and Other Grains, Pasta, Pancakes, and Dumplings, Eggs, Cheese, and Fritters, Vegetables, Salads, Sauces, Breads and Rolls, Cakes, Tarts, and Cookies, Desserts and Sweets, Drinks.
It consists of around 675 recipes pulled from history. The publishers have changed the recipes so they can be reproduced using modern ingredients and equipment.
It all adds up to 3000 years of wining and dining!
The books are in Very Good condition with no apparent defects, inside or out! A gift inscription is handwritten inside front of each book. The original slipcase also is Very Good overall, with minor edge/corner wear.
