Though used in Europe as early as the 16th and 17th centuries the pince-neztype spectacles are thought to have been seldom used in this country until the 1840s. Though popularity of the delicate style grew slowly limited use of these classy spectacles continued through the Civil War and on into the 1880s when used by President Teddy Roosevelt put the pince-nez on the map. The pair offered here are in excellent original condition of fine steel with even to the natural cork remaining on the nose pieces. Though fashioned from the finest high carbon steel of the day and with the best of workmanship, these earlier through Civil War period pince-nez glasses were quite fragile by nature of their design seldom surviving without broken and or missing components. This pair is in excellent complete and functioning condition. Thanks for visiting Gunsight Antiques!!
