Sir- I have the honor to forward herewith the following named enlisted men, Convalescents. Among the five soldiers listed was Josiah Newton who was wounded twice in 1864. His first wound was received on May 16, 1864, at Drewry's Bluff, Va., his second wound was received on June 3, 1864, at Cold Harbor, Va. The document is signed by James E. Fleming, Captain and Provost Marshal. Light age toning and wear. Very fine.
James E. Fleming, who was on detached service as Provost Marshal, for the 18th Army Corps, at the time this document was issued, was an officer of the 11th Pennsylvania Cavalry. He enlisted on September 11, 1861, as a private, and was mustered into the 11th Pennsylvania Cavalry. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant, on December 27, 1861. He was captured, with the exact date and place unknown, and was exchanged on September 21, 1862, at Aiken's Landing, Va. He was promoted to captain, on February 27, 1864, and was mustered out of the service on February 13, 1865.
Footnote: The 11th Connecticut Infantry had 6 men killed, and 15 wounded, at New Berne, N.C., on March 14-15, 1862; 33 killed, and 106 wounded, at Antietam, on September 17, 1862; 2 killed, 15 wounded, at Swift's Creek, Va., on May 9, 1864; 9 killed, 61 wounded, and 134 captured, at Drewry's Bluff, Va., on May 16, 1864; 17 killed, and 83 wounded, at Cold Harbor, Va., on June 3, 1864; and 5 killed, 41 wounded, and 9 captured, at Petersburg, Va., on June 18, 1864. |
