Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Many 19th century and early 20th century homes in Leavenworth, Kansas, have been returned to their former glory in recent years by owners intent upon preserving an important part of the history of the first town opened to settlement in the Kansas Territory in 1854. The homes presented in this collection are indicative of both the grandeur and the simplicity of Leavenworth's homes. A survey of residential properties taken in 1986 identified nearly 250 houses within the Leavenworth city limits that were architecturally or historically significant, or both. While delving into the history of these homes, the scope of the influence of many early Leavenworth area residents at the state and national level be-came apparent. Referenced here are United States senators, governors, newspaper publishers, doctors and lawyers, bankers, Army officers, a surveyor, bridge builder, federal judge, restaurateur extraordinary, cattle rancher, missionary, territorial bishop -- and one fellow who was either a moral vagabond or a paragon of virtue, depending on who was describing him. They all called Leavenworth "home." Consequently these pages tell the story of men and women who lived here, as well as the homes that were so important in their lives.
