Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Tales of Old Leavenworth revisits the times and tribulations, the fears and frustrations of pioneering men and women who helped carve a new town and a new state from the soil of Territorial Kansas. Retold here are accounts of devastating fires and floods and grasshopper invasions, the perils of children taken captive by Indians, of the first Leavenworth lawman to die in the line of duty, and the saga of "Bad Man" Bitzberger who succeeded three times in his six attempts at escape from the military prison at Fort Leavenworth. There is the story of A. A. Hyde, the inventor of Mentolatum, who started out in business as a bank clerk in Leavenworth, and accounts of the visits to early Leavenworth by Horace Greeley, Oscar Wilde and "General" Tom Thumb. Tales of Old Leavenworth recounts the capture and rescue of Charley Fisher, an alleged runaway slave; the big gold boom of the 1850s; Leavenworth's penchant for lager beer, and how a Kansas farmer's love affair helped bring prohibition to Kansas, as well as the story of flamboyant Colonel Charles R. Jennison and his Jennison's Jayhawkers, and how the Kansas Jayhawk was "born."
